Im Getting Confused !

Been reading the forum to get ideas on how to "optimize" my home network.

But then a question struck me ...

Modem (100Mbps) ---> Router (200Mbps) ----> 4 x Homeplug (200Mbps)

Does that mean 200/4 = 50mbps Max for each Homeplug ?

& 100/4= 25mbps for each point realistically speaking ?

Assuming of course all 4 points is drawing the same amount of bandwidth etc.

if you want best speed, do wired networking, meaning no homeplug

homeplug transmission rate may vary between 20mbps to 80mbps depending how noisy your power line is and how may spliter or extension cord you are using.

if your homeplug max line transfer speed is 80mbps (or worst case <20mbps, your 4 homeplug point may only get max 20mbps ( <20mbps divided by 4) if all is downloading at the same time.

- homeplug don't give you 100% the speed. Say example

you hoot a 200mbps homeplug, you might only get 20mbps speed. this is subjected to your house wiring.

Take bandwidth as similar to a pipe.
lets assume homeplug can reach 200mbps or take it as wired.

If a single homeplug is the only one using the bandwidth then it will be using the full 100mbps from the modem.


if 2 homeplugs are constantly using the bandwidth, then it will be divided by 2 or which ever has better signal will have slightly more bandwidth....etc but in a nut shell its shared between them.


if all 4 homeplugs are in use then it will split among them(depending on what they are doing; downloading surfing...etc).


point to note: Doesn't mean Computer A gets only 50% if Computer B is just surfing the net. Computer A probably gets at least 90% of the bandwidth as Computer B requires a little bit of bandwidth....etc



anyway, homeplug is hard to judge how much bandwidth you can get. So most likely each computer will get different Maximum bandwidth.

Hmm true but, i don't see the point of getting for example an Asus gigabit router, but my subscription is only 100mbps. Unless i'm gettin it wrong ? ...

In future u will sure upgrade to higher speed.

Gigabit ports is useful for local file to file copy.
By queuing data you can hit harddisk native throughput.

if on fast Ethernet, max is less than 100mbps....slower than USB.... thus to reach that speed, u need a gigabit port...also intranet transfer can be faster mah
