Hi

My 2011 iMac is still going strong, OS X 10.9.5

Lately, when I press & hold the power button, the screen remains black. Only after a few attempts then you can heard the starting sound and follow by the lit screen.

Is there anyway I can solve this? I am afraid very soon it will not start anymore.

Power supply probably failing. I'm just guessing one or more capacitors need longer time to charge up.

I don't know what the internals look like, but I'm guessing yours is the same model as this?

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2428+Teardown/5485

If so, your power supply should look like this:

wFZcHBWwLsHQQge1

Then if you're lucky, one or more of the brown cylindrical things on the left (capacitors) will have bloated tops, indicating that they're failing. It will be trivial to buy new ones from eBay or Sim Lim Tower and solder them onto your power supply, and they shouldn't cost you more than $10.

If those capacitors look fine then perhaps your power button just needs some cleaning because the contacts are not connecting properly.
