Hi there,

My 27" iMac up lorry lia. Went to a shop for testing, pay $100 to check.

After checking, the next day they told me is harddisk problem. Need to change harddisk and it cost $680 for 1TB !!

I asked why so expensive, they said iMac's harddisk is different from other harddisk and will be noisy.

The said iMac's harddisk have special chip to make it quiet ...

Is that correct ?

Or is there a recommendation for a cheaper place to replace the harddisk ?

Thanks

Is there a reliable shop that you can recommend to replace this Hardddisk ?

Thanks

I was planning to replace my iMac's HDD before and stumbled on a post that you need to put in an HDD with the same specification as the original one - which is rare co'z the Apple added a customization on a sensor. Some ordinary HDD will cause some issues like fans running due to the sensor.

TS, depending on what year yr iMac is what e shop person told u might not b totally false. check this thread on iFixit for more info. seems that if u dun replace e temp sensor correctly e fans will go full throttle. u can control with software but it doesn't seem like a proper solution.

https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View...e,+how+do+I+connect+Hard+Drive+thermal+sensor

update:
found more info. seems u dun actually need to connect e temp sensor. just need to use this software

http://exirion.net/ssdfanctrl/

it will control e fans using temp info from the hdd's SMART attributes.

Many iMacs after 2010 have this temperature sensor.

So when I bought my iMac, I got the biggest disc possible, and got it replaced under warranty before it expired.

That $680 is about right...
