I just got an iMac late 2013 27", and when I plugged my Newer Technology Voyager Q HDD dock (with a variety of HDDs), the drives are successfully mounted. But when I double click on it, it takes like 3mins before I can see the content. Then when I double click a folder, it takes like 10mins before I can see the content. It takes another 10mins to eject the HDD.

This is not normal based on the following :

1. The HDD dock works well with my Macbook air.
2. An external portable HDD is working well with the new iMac.

Is there something I'm missing here?

I even downgraded the new iMac OSX to maverick (10.9) which is the same as my Macbook Air, but problem still persists on the new iMac.

Why the HDD dock refuse to work with the new iMac?

If using USB, please try different USB ports and disconnect any other device connected.
Run software update to make sure you're not missing any updates.
Also try on safe boot.

Have you tried to verify the disk in Disk Utility?
What format is the HDD, could it be in NTFS and you have not installed drivers on the iMac?

HDDs are extended journaled, they are less than a year old, 1-3TB in size. All has the same problem.
I tried to open disk utility but it just hangs there forever.
What other drivers are there for iMac?

If HFS+ then no drivers necessary just make sure you have not missed any software update especially any firmware updates.

Try safe boot and make sure no other devices are connected.

Also try disk utility in recovery partition and see if does the same.

If issue happens even on recovery partition and a clean OS then it's worthy for an escalation to Apple engineering team which probably be a fix by some kind of firmware update in the near future.

another way to check is to use thunderbolt-to-fw-or-esata adapter. dat's wat me meant earlier. different interface can get different results wan. different macs too. me experienced b4. but buy adapter can buy a new hdd dock from hotway liao.
