iMac microphone is broken

So the iMac microphone has decided to die on me. Very annoying cos teleconference is now impossible - I can hear the other party but not the other way round. The warranty is expired and I really hate the idea of bringing it for repair and getting a huge bill for it.

I'm quite sure it's a hw problem on the mic and assuming it's, can I solve the problem by getting an external USB microphone?
