Hello all,

Looking to get the iMac 21.5i with the NVIDIA GPU. I have a budget of $500 for my upgrades. $250 is going to the fusion drive so i have another $250 for either the processor or RAM.

Which one is more better? Thanks.

What's the imac mainly used for? Cpu is soldered to the main board and not user upgradable, ram is hidden inside the alu frame and not easily accessible. For my usage, i'll upgrade to 16gb ram.

The purpose of this iMac is important and only you can answer to this question.

If you are doing web surfing, watching youtube and office application processing, I would suggest you to spend that $250 on AppleCare instead.

I dont use any video editing software. Just streaming Youtube and lots of websurf and watching movies. Just an average consumer looking to invest on a decent desktop.

However im not sure if i should go for i7 or 16GB RAM that would benefit me for a long term...

For Youtube and websurf, just get fusion drive and Applecare. Don't buy from Applecare from Apple store, it's more expensive.

Go for i7, stay with 8GB. You won't be using a lot of memory.

I concur with the Applecare plan, you will regret it after 1 year and something breaks down. You rather original Apple parts of unknown brand 3rd party parts ?

If you can spurge a bit more, get a 256GB SSD, or a 1TB fusion drive.

Hi, I keep noticing you have been advising Apple users in the HWZ forum to purchase Applecare Protection Plan from other sites instead of Apple store since they have been selling cheaper.

Which particular seller or vendor do you recommend ? Can you advice where we can get APP that is covered for Singapore ?

I gotten my applecares from ebay (just search and check their reviews), usually cost about us$100. I've claimed warranty repairs without any issues. There is also a guy selling in this forum @ s$168. So just research to find a reputable seller and a savings of 40%. Alternatively, buy from retail (stock configuration) and get applecare at a discount.

For ram, it's just a few screws and 5 mins work and another 50% savings :s22:

Ah. I see that's very nice of you to share. So far with the APP that you have purchased from this source, you have successfully register it I presume. Have you thus far manage to use it with any authorised Apple centre for the equipment it protects ?

Well luckily I don't have any need to service it still. When I last checked few mths ago, on my account device management page on Apple I can still see its covered by Apple care until the date 3yrs later from my purchase date. Hopefully that status doesn't disappear.

EDIT: Just logged in to https://supportprofile.apple.com/homePage and checked. Device still under valid status :D

Repairs and Service Coverage: Active
Your product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under the AppleCare Protection Plan.
Estimated Expiration Date: June 17, 2016

I thought the main issue with getting applecare from 'unauthorize' seller is fact that the same applecare code might be reuse/resold, in which apple will require proof of purchase and box to authenticate the 'real' buyer.

I've only heard the seller could refund the remaining unused portion of the APP and left us out in the cold.

So far this guy getting good reviews still. If you don't bother the discount then just get from official retailers which sometimes may have discounts also.

I would like to add in how I invest in my Mac too!!

1. Buy Applecare from established people in this forum. They are trustworthy! You can ask for entire package but higher cost though still cheaper than outside.

2. Buy RAM from Sim Lim NEVER from Apple Website. Too high price and does not void warranty.

3. Still got money to burn? Buy Logitech solar keyboard. No more replacement of batteries!!
My best investment yet.

Yes that's what I have verified with Apple too. In fact with regards to lower pricing of APP, I have escalate all the way up to Apple a few days back. Asking to the highest level handling APP. They are also quite helpless to the situation.

So it seems there is possibility that these lower cost APP are due to selling of unclaimed APP. That means suppose if I sold APP to some uneducated consumer and they didn't claim it online, or those unlucky fellas got scam by it. I can potentially sell legit APP to those at a lower price, not that I must, but it will looks good on the public.

The whole cycle is funny. APPLE will not be that stupid to sell a piece of service that THEY THEMSELVES is the PRIME and need to provide the service out of their own pocket at a lower price to another tier of retail and then sell them cheaper. Obviously the consumers will buy from the cheaper source, but WHO is producing the labour to provide the service ? APPLE SERVICE CENTRE

I am skeptical the registration code can be easily cracked since it has to naturally come 1-to-1 authenticated against Apple support database.

Hence I'm inclined to believe when you get a cheaper APP, someone or a few of someone have fallen victim to the scam done by the same vendor you are getting the APP from, or they are in fact the 3rd tier retail that got it from the black market that sells to them.
