i have a 2011 27" iMac that has a broken microphone. i tried getting an external microphone but i don't know why it doesn't work. pretty much eliminated software problem after i reinstalled the os.

typically not having a microphone is not a big problem until time for conference/video calls. major bummer.

does anyone know a good local repair place? preferably someone who will come to my place, the darn thing is heavy.

I believe you need to change your input source after attaching an external mic.

System Preferences > Sound > Input Sources.

try using a usb one, or a usb headset like from logitech, and remember to select the correct source
