Singtel claims that you will incur an overseas sms when you activate it. Anybody from Singtel can confirm you receive this? Any users from M1/Starhub receive similar charges?

Yes.
Activating iMessage/FaceTime will incur an overseas sms.
iirc for starhub it's 15cents/global sms.

I was told by SH CSO that FaceTime clocks a global SMS per session! Since then, totally stopped using it. :(

The international SMS number it calls to activate FaceTime is 00447786205094.

A small price to pay if you use it.

If you hardly ever use FaceTime, especially while overseas, turn FaceTime off in Settings!

As for iMessage, could anyone confirm the same FaceTime activation also activates it? I don't use iMessage much.

I use Email for my FaceTime and iMessage as it's allowed in iOS5, so no more activation charges for me when I restore or change SIM cards.

It's silly why my iPad2 can do so and previously on iOS4 it didn't allow. Even non iPhone devices like iTouch could use email/AppleID as the connecting factor for FaceTime.

Went BKK and used iMessage on my iPhone and iPad2, no issues.

if u dun on pushmail, the email will be received but u won't be able to open and read it right? anyway, the email/ sms is to inform u that the service is activated already is it? if not, what is this email/ sms about? why is it needed?

What I did was activate iMessage, and leave it there, locally
If other party is not on iMessage, it converts to normal SMS, locally

When overseas, roam phone line, turn off cellular data and data roam as it can be very costly to roam
Normal calls and SMS still comes in

When u got wifi connection, whatsapp, iMessage will reach u. Even if sender earlier sent u via iMessage (knowing u are on iMessage as well), the message will come in when u are online via wifi.

It seems tt it does not convert to SMS even if the line is on roam with normal SMS function. (maybe someone can cfm this)

what i understand is iMessage can work over wifi or 3G. If other party activates their iMessage, then the sms will be sent as sort of email using data, but still appearing under message. This way no sms charge. Since we are on data plan, it will be consider free. Like what is said if other party does not have iMessage then a normal SMS will be send out with cost.

but what happens if overseas? If we off data roaming, but 3G is still on, will the sms be send as data? Unless iMessage can know we are on roaming if not wouldn't it be roaming data charge?

not sure whether data roaming is cheaper or overseas sms?

3G on, i believe data still running, cos when u off cellular data on a 4s, the 3G logo is off, which puts user to the old simple network for calls and sms, and i think it can support MMS

correct me if i am wrong.
