I am a nsf and i recently reported to my unit mo for insomnia and i was referred to imh as a result.

I heard that seeking treatment in imh will leave a record and this would make it very difficult to find job in the future even though it is a minor case.

I just want to seek clarification on this point whether my future will be affected and if i could cancel the imh appointment as i dont think my condition is that serious to warrant me a visit to the imh.

mental illness is not just go mad. maybe things fall under it like depression, anxiety attack, etc.

maybe they just wan to make sure you are not stressed or something. maybe just psych review.

anyway, in the event you do log a mental illness case, in future, it will only affect when you buy insurance or you try to join civil service. else I don't think there is any other effects.

dun cancel the appointment. you should seek help if you really need it. if you lack for sleep, later accident will happen easily. worst case is u dun die but cause others to die by accident.

patient records are confidential. I doubt anyone in the private sector will be able to dig up the records unless they are seriously out to dig into your past. Even in the civil sector, the most they will be able to see your NS records which state you were referred to IMH but i doubt they will see the details.

anyway, do you even know which doctor you are seeing? maybe just see psychiatrist for pre evaluation? regarding records, of cos they will have your attendance record, else how are you or the hospital prove to SAF that you saw the doctor and didn't go awol? Again, having records doesn't mean they will show it to just anyone.

and besides don't you think can't sleep is a serious problem? why would you want to avoid seeing the doctor now when it is free? you rather see the doctor when you ord and have to pay for it on ur own? you will still get a record no matter what.

honestly, insomnia is a small problem, usually can be arrested and cured easily. if due to your own fear and self drawn stigma, you delay your treatment, and let it lapse into your future studies or work, trust me, any reputation or hope you have will be completely gone. isn't that a worst state to be in?

That's the most critical part, if no metal problem, why refer to IMH???

TS, my take is DON"T GO and better don't have such record in your life. You will regret it.

Let say if i choose to pay on my own and visit outside doctor for treatment, would there still be records of me being referred to imh?

If you think about it, there's ALREADY a record of the referral.

Whether there is a record on whether you went for the appointment or not is another thing.

You also do yourself no favour by announcing to the whole world on this public forum that you got a referral to IMH.

Medical records are P&C. Unless you are intending to run for President, I doubt any one would bother digging through. On the other hand, some application forms may ask if you have any pre-existing medical conditions which could include mental conditions.

Insomnia is not mental however if they referred you to IMH it could be because they suspect its related to mental e.g. stress. You can choose to lie on your application form but good luck if they find out.

Bottom line, if you are pretty sure you are not mental, why go to IMH?

don't be an arse. if he has problem sleeping, it is an issue. it is not a joking matter.

so next time in future, if u have any serious illness, you dun see doctor okie, since it will affect your insurance.

the only way you can avoid have records is to see a doctor overseas.

but if i'm you, I will go for first appointment and see what the whole thing is about.

it is not like they are going to strap you and throw you inside a cell. it is just a initial consultation.

IMH is a hospital which service many mental illness, it is not siao lang geng like those old folks like to say it is.

anyway, bottom line, if u have a real issue, delaying it will not make it better. denying it will make it worst. it is your life, why you worry what others say.

As long as u are not faking it, u should be more concerned with getting the sickness cured rather than worry about records. There is no shame having IMH record if u had the sickness, it can't be helped. It just takes some time explaining during interview process, if any. Like what some said, medical records are private and confidential, not supposed to be revealed.
