My crucial m4 finally uplorry yesterday. Unable to detect the ssd in bios. Tried power cycle as per crucial sop but still not able to detect. I'm going to buy Samsung Evo 250Gb to replace it and have some questions with regards to os installation.

My previous m4 was upgraded to windows 10 via free upgrade from Windows 8.1. I used the 'upgrade' option. Understand that once upgrading is done, Windows 10 will be tied to hardware and from there can proceed with clean installation as u can skip the page where it ask for product key if one wanted to.
So for my case, will I be able to clean install Windows 10 to the new ssd and skip the product key page during installation? All parts the same, only changed new ssd. Thanks in advance for those who reply

yes, tagged to ur mobo

besides, i thought windows 10 is free?

So as long as mb same installation should be fine? The upgrade to Windows 10 is free. However the CD key given seems generic. So I not sure whether can skip the CD key page if prompted for it

Thanks. Already got a bootable Windows 10 usb created when I upgraded last time. So I will be able to clean install to the new ssd?

Yes, clean install, click on Skip button when ask to enter CD key. Later online to activate.

Sorry. Just wanna hijack your thread to ask something related to SSD too.

I've already installed Windows 8 but it is 32 bit and I would like to install 64 bit soon. How should I go about doing it without decreasing the performance of SSD?

I read that full format is not recommended, some say quick format will do and some say secure erase.

Can advise? Thanks!

Just do a quick format. Its what I did. Anyway now SSDs are so robust you dont need to worry about endurance unless you gonna write 200TB of data, which you arent. Unless you are in a server farm, you dont have to worry. You could full format and still be ok.

Just a quick format will do, don't waste time on full format unless you suspect your SSD is dying.

I did the reinstallation but it was through USB. There is an error stating that i cannot install windows on this partition. Then i googled for help and it say that i need the perform the following.

Shift + F10 at the Install Now page, a CMD will pop out

Followed by entering diskpart => list => select disk 0 => clean

It will say that the disk has been successfully cleaned. After which, i am able to install the Windows through USB.

I find it strange that after successfully installing Windows, i booted into BIOS wanting to change the boot order. In Boot tab and under boot options there are 2 boots which are (1) Windows Boot Manager (P5 SAMSUNG EVO 850 SSD) and then (2) SAMSUNG EVO 850 SSD.

I selected (1) and disabled (2) and my windows was about to start up successfully.

Why is it so? Is it corrupted and are they the same?

Fyi, I did it under some UEFI boot.
