Intend to get an i5 4590. Will it be better to use the stock fan or buy a custom one? Do not intend to over clock.

recommend CM hyper TX3 evo
its one of the smaller and lighter tower-style coolers - 14cm, 400 grams - that work better than stock cooler

Just use the stock one first. If you are ok with its performance and noise then you just save yourself from one burden. :)

Depend on what you are doing... for me I did not OC, but had to get a aftermarket cooler because I am running my cpu on load for high periods of time.

Stock cooler was giving me temps of about 81deg, changed to 212x and getting temps of about 50~60 under load.

even if one doesnt overclock, its best to keep cpu cool to prolong its life

especially when one keeps the system running 24hrs/5days and is in a non-aircon room, like me

i did do a slight overclock though,
the stock cooler did serve me well but temps climb up faster than my current gemini cooler...
yes, i'm trying to cool my mosfets and such, thus the low profile cooler design

i scavenged a i7-3770 from another com and fixed the stock fan myself with thermal paste.

my idle temp is 50+ degrees. is this too hot?

normal usage can go up to 80 degrees. if i use prime95, it hits the tjmax of 105 degrees..

it is normal to see these temps for a stock cooler.

It is slightly on the high side.
Idle temp should normally be around 40.

Try re-sit your hsf.

Deepcool Gammax 300 for $29. Extremely quite and good for non-overclocking cpu. Got pre-applied thermal paste too.

depends on where u live, if u r from India idle temp with stock hsf is 50C+ i can understand. locally, room temp ~30C with stock hsf, idle temp should be ~40C.
