Interpret CPU benchmarking numbers

How to read and understand them in term of real world performance difference?

For example, processor A has score of 5,000. Processor B has score of 10,000. Means B is twice as fast as A?

If A can complete a task with certain software configuration in 2 seconds, means B can do the same task with similar software configuration in 1 second (twice as fast)?

Those are synthetic tests, nothing conclusive unless you are using those software as your daily task.

Double the score cannot be interpret as double performance nor need 1/2 the time to complete the task. There are overhead and resource allocation issues which cannot to put outside of the equation.

yes you can read it that way. But actual performance difference will be less.

no .... because there are MANY benchmark test that does not equate similarly to real world workload

example the jump from haswell to skylake , some benchmark the score jump by more than 30% at same clockspeed ...... but other real world workload may be 5% improvement only

But generally in term of comparing performance, how much faster is i7 vs i5, i5 vs i3, i3 vs Pentium and Pentium vs Celeron? How many percents faster or slower? Is there anyway to find out or estimate based on benchmark scores?

Real time 3D rendering (processor heavy type) will give you a realistic performance on the raw power of the processor. Not these kind of synthetic tests benchmark which is waste of time doing it.

there is no fixed percentage how much faster or slower , different software different percentage improvement between older vs newer processor

and all these processors are different clockspeed out of the retail box for consumers unless overclock to same speed for comparison



pentium celeron all those doesn't matter for laptop as there are weak intel atoms hiding under the celeron branding , a very sharp drop in computing power .... while for desktop cpu the pentium or celeron series are still capable at the same clockspeed compared to the more expensive i3 i5
for laptop there are i5 quadcore that are stronger than i7 dual core

It really depends on what sort of program, whether it can utilise hyper threading.

run the benchmarks urself & look at the raw results u interested in (secs, fps, samples/s), instead of the converted "score" numbers

Doesn't work that way.
Your example only works for very well optimize programs that supports multi core.

It depends on the program.
If the program is optimize for 2 core only, then 4 core or 8 core would be useless as it uses only 2 core.
So a Dual Core CPU running at higher Ghz would be more faster than a 4 core or 8 core same architecture CPU running at a lower Ghz.

Then again if the program is badly optimize for multi-core, the 4 core running at a high Ghz would be faster than the 8 core running at a lower Ghz.

Maybe I try translate

Pl correct if I wrong

A. Most word processing, spreadsheet, web surfing , youtube.. dual core enough; even got 4 cores but most time it's the first 2 doing the work;

B. Newer games, video editing/processing, Virtual Reality etc multicore is a must.. i5 or i7 .. the more fast n expensive the better also ... more cores does help with background processing, like virus scanning in background.

In short, if $$ is no issue.. get i7

If poor man like me, then u know.. anything will do

Edit: just to add..

generally, I7 is 30% faster than i5 and
i5 about 30% > i3 at base clock.
