CBS Renews ‘NCIS’, ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’ & ‘CSI: Vegas’ For New Seasons

US network CBS has handed out another batch of early renewals, bringing their total up to 19 renewed shows this season. This group brings NCIS to Season 21, whilst both NCIS: Hawai’i and CSI: Vegas get 3rd Seasons.

The three shows are joined by ’60 Minutes’, ‘Survivor’, ‘The Amazing Race’, ‘Tough As Nails’, ‘Lingo’ and true crime docuseries ’48 Hours’ which also land new seasons in this batch (although don’t most don’t air in the UK.)

CBS previously renewed their #1 new drama Fire Country, their #1 comedy Young Sheldon, the US version of Ghosts, comedies The Neighborhood, and Bob Hearts Abishola, alongside So Help Me Todd, The Equalizer, FBI, FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted.

In addition to all those, CBS has also given an early series order to The Never Game, a new drama starring and executive produced by Justin Hartley (‘Smallville’, ‘This Is Us’). Based on the bestselling novel by Jeffery Deaver, ‘The Never Game‘ features Hartley as lone-wolf survivalist Colter Shaw, who roams the country as a “reward seeker,” using his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries while contending with his own fractured family.

“This season CBS is continuing its winning tradition, delivering an unparalleled combination of top returning series and new hit shows that are entertaining huge audiences on both broadcast and streaming,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “It is a testament to the stellar work being done by our best-in-class talent in front of and behind the camera that we have had yet another exceptional season, and I know we will only continue to build on this foundation of outstanding programming as we look ahead toward next fall.”

With 19 renewals in the bag, that does beg the question “what is still missing?”… Three notably absent are Blue Bloods, S.W.A.T. and East New York (the latter of which does not yet have a UK broadcaster at the moment.)

Don’t panic (yet) if you are fans of ‘Blue Bloods’, which is in its 13th Season, and ‘SWAT’, which is currently in Season 6. Both are in active negotiations for renewals. The issue is that, the longer the show goes on, the more expensive it becomes due to the long-standing cast salaries going up. However, inevitably, ratings also decline, particularly the linear ratings which are used for traditional advertising. That means CBS is looking to cut the budgets of the series, which means negotiations take longer to work out. At the moment, things are looking likely for ‘Blue Bloods’ getting a 14th Season, and ‘SWAT’ landing Season 7, it’s just taking time to sort out. Both shows sell well internationally, which also goes in their favour.

Things are a little more precarious for ‘East New York’, as it is a new drama, and is very much “on the bubble”. It may get picked up again, but CBS will be looking to see how other shows perform on the network, such as the upcoming mid-season drama True Lies, before they make a decision.

NCIS‘ and ‘NCIS: Hawai’i‘ both air on Disney+ in the UK, whilst ‘CSI: Vegas‘ airs on Alibi. If you want to keep track of any of the shows mentioned in this article, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.

Twilight Saga Is Preparing to Bring Its Sparkly Vampires to Television

Lionsgate is currently developing a television series based on the highly influential Twilight Saga.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the project itself is still in the early stages of planning and information is still sparse. At the time of writing, the series does not have a confirmed network or platform, nor does it have a writer or director attached. Sources have alleged that Lionsgate Television plans on producing the show independently before shopping the broadcast rights around to a variety of potential buyers. The project also does not have a set release window.

Original author Stephenie Meyer is reportedly involved in the show's development but in what capacity remains unknown. Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig, who previously served as Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president, are also attached as executive producers. At the time of publication, there is no word on whether the show is looking to adapt the novels or example the universe of The Twilight Saga with a new narrative.

The Global Rise of Twilight

The Twilight Saga is a massively popular series of novels penned by Meyer and published in 2005. The story largely focuses on protagonist Bella Swan, who moves to the sleepy town of Forks, Washington. Unimpressed with her new life, Bella ultimately falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious recluse who she quickly learns is actually a vampire. The two become embroiled in a series of high-stakes escapades, often involving a passionate love triangle between the aforementioned couple and a werewolf named Jacob Black. While the core series comprises four novels, Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, Meyer also penned several spinoffs including Life and Death and Midnight Sun.

After the runaway success of the books, The Twilight Saga was adapted into a series of live-action movies starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. While the first movie in the franchise premiered to mixed-to-positive reviews, the sequels were all critical failures despite their massive success at the box office. Many reviews praised the dedicated performances by Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner but derided the weak script and over-dramatic story and pandering to fans of the source material.

Lionsgate Television will likely reveal more information The Twilight Saga television series in the coming months.

“The Boroughs” – Netflix Announces New Supernatural Series from the Creators of “Stranger Things”

From Executive Producers The Duffer Brothers (“Stranger Things”), Netflix today announced a series order for “The Boroughs,” an upcoming supernatural mystery series.

“The Boroughs” is created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), and the duo will also serve as Showrunners.

Here’s the logline for the upcoming sci-fi series, which sounds like a mixture of “Stranger Things” and Cocoon. Old folks battling otherworldly monsters… we like the sound of that!

“In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.”
Eight episodes have been ordered, with Hilary Leavitt also Executive Producing. The project is from the Duffer Brothers x Netflix collaboration label Upside Down Pictures.

The Duffer Brothers said in a statement, “We’ve been fans of Jeff and Will’s writing for a long time, and when they pitched us their idea for The Boroughs, we immediately knew they had something very special on their hands. While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching.”

Addiss and Matthews said, “ We’re thrilled to be back at Netflix. Working alongside the Duffer Brothers (who are pretty good at making shows) and their team has been a dream come true. They bring the perfect balance of heart and horror to our story. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to unlock the dark mystery buried beneath the sunny facade of The Boroughs.”

BBC Orders 'Lord of the Flies' Television Adaptation

William Golding's classic novel Lord of the Flies is heading back to the screen, this time as a television adaptation. Recently, the BBC announced that a four-episode adaptation of the novel is in the works. Each episode is set to be one-hour long, and the show will air on BBC One and play on BBC iPlayer.

Though several key creative and cast roles remain unfilled for now, the upcoming series has already found its writer with multi-BAFTA award-winner Jack Thorne. With him on board, it already seems the show is in good hands, as Thorne has previously worked on page-to-screen adaptations in his career. Most recently, Thorne is known for his work on HBO's His Dark Materials, a three season show based on the Philip Pullman book trilogy. Thorne has also found success with adapted projects such as Wonder, The Secret Garden (2020), and Enola Holmes.

Thorne will executive produce alongside the BBC's Nawal Faizullah, and Eleven's Jamie Campbell and Joel Wilson (both of whom worked on Sex Education). The show is an Eleven production for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. It is backed by Sony Pictures Television.

What Is Lord of the Flies About?

First published in 1954, Golding's sharp novel follows a group of schoolboys who become trapped on an island after a plane crash. With no adults around to supervise them, the boys relish their accidental freedom, living what first seems to be an ideal life. However, in the group's attempt to remain civil -- including putting their own system of leadership in place -- things only grow worse, sending the boys into a vicious downward spiral. The book went on to receive multiple film adaptations, first in the 1960s by director Peter Brook. Nearly 30 years later, it was adapted again in 1990, which became the more recognized of the two. As of 2020, another film adaptation by Luca Guadagnino is in the works, though no additional updates have been announced since.

In a statement about the upcoming series, BBC Drama director Lindsay Salt said:
"We are so excited that Jack Thorne will be adapting such an iconic, timeless and much-loved novel for television for the very first time – and that the adaptation has been endorsed by the late William Golding’s family. It’s a formidable writing and production team that will bring these definitive characters to life for all generations."
Lord of the Flies does not yet have a projected release date or release window. In the meantime, check out the trailer for the 1990 movie adaptation below:

Brie Larson Gives Lessons In Chemistry In Apple TV+ Show Trailer

Brie Larson is a scientist who becomes a TV cooking show host in the trailer for Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV+. Oscar-winner Larson has a huge 2023 ahead of her as she’s set to appear in a pair of highly-anticipated franchise movies. First up, Larson joins Vin Diesel and the family as Mr. Nobody's daughter Tess in the action-movie entry Fast X. Then Larson joins a very different family as she returns to the MCU as Carol Danvers in The Marvels.

But gigantic franchise movies aren’t all Larson has in the works for 2023, as she’s also set to star in the streaming show Lessons in Chemistry, which just dropped its first trailer.

An Apple TV+ series, Lessons in Chemistry is based on the best-selling novel by Bonnie Garmus, and boasts Lee Eisenberg (WeCrashed) as showrunner. Set in the 1950s, the show stars Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a woman with a dream of being a scientist, who ends up putting her chemistry skills to use in an unexpected way. The official synopsis for the show explains further:
After Elizabeth is fired from her lab, she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show. But rather than showcase recipes, Elizabeth aims to show a nation of overlooked housewives – and the men tuning in – that the status quo can be changed as she craves to return to the lab.

What The Trailer Tells Us About Lessons In Chemistry

The trailer immediately showcases the period setting of Lessons in Chemistry with its music and look, then dives right in to setting up the story of Larson’s Elizabeth, who works in a lab and is in the words of another character “one of the smartest people” there. That may indeed be true, but Elizabeth nevertheless is quickly seen taking her skills to television, where she dramatically announces “Welcome viewers. My name is Elizabeth Zott, and this is Supper at Six.”

Supper at Six must indeed be a huge hit, as adoring female fans are shown standing and applauding. Perhaps more telling though is the image of a small girl seated on the living room floor, drinking in the sight of Elizabeth teaching her viewers how to cook (and also presumably teaching lessons in chemistry, as the title promises). The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel immediately leaps to mind thanks to the trailer’s look and feel, and thanks to the character of Elizabeth, who could indeed be the science world’s answer to Midge Maisel.

Larson of course tackled a historically significant role in Captain Marvel, playing the MCU’s first movie-leading female superhero. Lessons in Chemistry may not be as Earth-shaking as Carol Danvers’ cinematic adventures, but it does afford Larson the chance to play a different kind of hero, one who doesn't need superpowers to take on the patriarchy (unless knowledge of science counts as a superpower). Lessons in Chemistry hits Apple TV+ this fall.

Bruce Campbell has joined the upcoming Peacock series “Hysteria!” in a recurring role, Variety has learned exclusively.

The show was originally ordered at Peacock in August 2022. Per the official series description, “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.”

Campbell joins previously announced cast members Anna Camp, Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis, Nikki Hahn, and Julie Bowen. Campbell will star as Chief Dandridge, described as “a small-town police chief whose understanding of his community is put to the test after a disturbing series of murders, disappearances, and unexplained phenomena.”

Campbell broke out as the star of the “Evil Dead” film franchise, with the most recent entry, “Evil Dead Rise,” debuting in theaters on April 21. Campbell is an executive producer on that film. He also reprised the role of Ash from the films in the Starz TV series “Ash vs Evil Dead.” Campbell is also known for his roles in films like “Bubba Ho-Tep” and “My Name Is Bruce” and in TV shows like “Burn Notice” and “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.”

He is repped by APA.

John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner will also executive produce, with Bender and Weiner doing so via Good Fear Content. Scott Stoops will be supervising producer for Good Fear. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to direct and executive produce the first episode. The series is produced by UCP.

Stranger Things, TMNT Crossover Announced by IDW & Dark Horse

One of the biggest properties from the 1980s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will officially crossover with the juggernaut that is Stranger Things, making an ouroboros of 40-year-old culture not seen in some time. IDW Publishing confirmed the news online, revealing the cover art and confirming more news is on the way. "The comic book crossover event of the summer is coming," IDW tweeted. "Stay tuned for more details! @DarkHorseComics." It would appear that writer Cameron Chittock and artist Fero Pe are attached to the series, their surnames listed on the full cover that was shown by IDW Publishing. This remains to be confirmed however.

In recent years the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have crossed over with a slew of popular franchises. Three volumes of TMNT/Batman have been published while the second volume of a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers crossover is currently ongoing. Other crossovers have included TMNT/Ghostbusters, TMNT/X-Files, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs. Street Fighter (set to be published this year). TMNT has even crossed over with itself as various versions of the turtles have met in multiversal adventures.

Fans of both Stranger Things and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles know that the two franchises have crossed already in one form, action figures. Playmates has released four two-packs featuring new versions of the Turltes paired with characters from Stranger Things, including Raphael & Jim Hopper, Michelangelo & Dustin, Donnatello & Lucas, and Leonardo & Eleven.

The toy crossovers even featured a narrative reason for why such a meeting of franchises would happen, with the boxes all reading: "The Turtles have tracked TCRI's latest illegal experiments from NYC to Hawkins, Indiana, where it's trying to harness the power of the upside down. The half-shell heroes must team up with eleven and her friends to try and stop TCRI's next experiment before it succeeds." It remains to be seen if the new comic series will have a similar plot, since this was just a non-canon explanation on a toy box, but it's not a bad place to start!

This new series continues Stranger Things' expansive footprint in the comic book world. Dark Horse has been publishing prequel and spin-off stories set within the franchise for some time including character specific volumes like Science Camp and Six. Stranger Things also crossed over with the biggest property that makes the most sense, Dungeons & Dragons. In that series, we saw Mike, Lucas, Will, and Dustin play out the DND campaign that would define their friendship, and set the stage for the Demogoron.

The Diplomat Season 2: Creator Talks Renewal After Netflix's Speedy Night Agent Pickup

The Diplomat season 2 gets an update from its creator after Netflix's speedy renewal of The Night Agent. Continuing in the genre of political thrillers, Netflix recently debuted The Diplomat. The eight-episode series stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, the new U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Though she's great in a crisis zone, she's less at ease with her new post. That discomfort is also increased by her complicated marriage to Hal (Rufus Sewell), and the fact that she's being prepared to potentially take on a much bigger role in American politics. The main cast also includes Ali Ahn, David Gyasi, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh.

In an interview on the April 21 edition of The Hollywood Reporter's TV's Top 5 podcast, series creator and showrunner Debora Cahn addressed the possibility of The Diplomat season 2. Even though it's usually the case that Netflix takes its time with renewal decisions, The Night Agent season 2 was quickly confirmed. Cahn noted that she has hopes and ideas for the show's future, which are detailed in the quote below:

I certainly like long-form stories I like being able to write about minutiae and the little odd moments of people’s lives and their worlds. So I like long-form storytelling. I certainly hope it continues. And I have a lot of ideas about where it would go. But we’ll see. We shall see what happens.
I was raised in, you know, broadcast network television, I worked in that medium for about ten years, and on shows that ran for hundreds of episodes. So, I look for a world that I feel can be populated endlessly with people and characters and, and scenarios and like—this is not a world that’s going to run out of steam anywhere. One of the real gifts of being on Homeland was… I felt they kind of broke new ground in the world of you know, the show is based on these two leads. Then, you know, one of them isn’t there. And the other one still is. And it turns out this third person was the lead the whole time… and we’re going to this country, and then we’re going to that country. I mean, they shot all over the world every season. They completely rebuilt the show on a new continent. So I don’t know that we would ever run out of stories in London. But if we did, there are other countries. I’m okay going to Paris for a couple of years. I’ll be alright with that.

How The Diplomat Already Sets Up Multiple Seasons

The Diplomat shows an appealing confidence in its future right from the jump. It's established that Kate is on a shortlist to take over as the Vice President. The current holder of the job will eventually have to step down due to a money-related scandal, and Kate is one of the few names that's being floated to replace her.

The job in the U.K. is meant to be ceremonial, but that is quickly complicated by the escalating rhetoric and potential war between the U.K. and Iran. This is all established in the premiere episode, proving that the series is swiftly establishing a path forward. There's also a lot to be enjoyed in the scenes where Kate is resistant to the high-profile position, just trying to get the job while everyone around her, including her husband, is essentially plotting her future.

The Diplomat includes Michael McKean, known for playing Chuck McGill on Better Call Saul, as the U.S. president. If the new political thriller proves to be a massive success on the level of The Night Agent, it would be all too easy to imagine a future where McKean and Russell lead future seasons. But as the creator indicates, that depends heavily on viewership.

Stranger Things Writers Tease Season 5 Has Connection to Evil Dead Rise

There's definitely a lot of speculation surrounding the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things, which is poised to serve as the finale of the Netflix juggernaut. Over the years, Stranger Things has taken a pastiche approach to countless genre projects — and apparently, it has ties to a recent horror hit. In a tweet on Friday, the official Stranger Things writers room revealed that Season 5 of Stranger Things has "something small but awesome in common" with Evil Dead Rise, which arrives in theaters this weekend to critical and fan acclaim.

In a follow-up tweet, the writers room confirmed some of the fans' guesses "are so close, but no cigar."

What is Evil Dead Rise about?

Evil Dead Rise is billed as a twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. The film stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher.

Why is Stranger Things ending?

"Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons," the Duffers shared in a statement last year when the final season was announced. "It proved too large to tell in four, but -- as you'll soon see for yourselves -- we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; Season 5 will be the last. There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broke police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down. As always, we are grateful for your patience and support. Over and out, Matt and Ross."

Are you looking forward to the fifth and final season of Stranger Things? What do you think of its supposed connection to Evil Dead Rise? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Season 5 of Stranger Things will arrive on Netflix at a later date.

True Detective Creator Developing The Magnificent Seven TV Series Revival

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has been tapped to write and executive produce The Magnificent Seven, the previously-announced TV series in development at Amazon Studios and based on the beloved film from Amazon's MGM library. The property is one of a number of MGM films that are due to be revived for film and television, as Amazon seeks to look beyond just James Bond and Rocky for IP they can mine from the MGM vault. According to Deadline, who broke the news today, Pizzolatto set out to create an original Western for Amazon Studios while Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) was developing The Magnificent Seven.

Per the report, the original Western was supposed to center on "a former outlaw on an epic journey, assembling a gang while facing a threat from his past as he and his cohorts encounter danger along the way." After management suggested that it would be an easier sell with existing IP attached, it "morphed" into The Magnificent Seven.

The report suggests that Johnson will remain on board as an executive producer, along with Lawrence Mirisch and Bruce Kaufman.

Obvioulsy it's early days, but here's what Deadline has in terms of an official synopsis for The Magnificent Seven series: "In the tradition of the great epics from the golden age of westerns, an outlaw and his cohorts must unite a disparate band of indelible fighters to defend a settlement of immigrant homesteaders in an open range war against cattle barons in central Texas, telling an expansive saga of adventure, action and romance."

While most audiences only really think about the 1960 original, The Magnificent Seven spawned three sequels, a TV show (which ran from 1998 until 2000), and a 2016 big-screen remake. The 1960 film, which was directed by John Sturges, starred Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, and Steve McQueen, among others. The movie was an Americanization of Seven Samurai, the acclaimed Japanese film from director Akira Kurosawa.

The 2016 movie, which was written by Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk, starred Denzel Washington alongisde Marvel stars Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D'Onofrio. Washington, Wenk, and The Magnificent Seven director Antoine Fuqua are reteaming for a third Equalizer movie later this year, which just released a new poster earlier today

Nightsleeper: Peaky Blinders' Joe Cole Set for BBC Real-Time Thriller

Peaky Blinders & Gangs of London star Joe Cole has been cast as lead alongside Alexandra Roarch in the upcoming real-time BBC thriller series Nightsleeper, which takes place in real-time onboard a train. He will co-star with Alexandra Roach (The Light in the Hall) in the drama, which is from Nick Leather (The Control Room, Mother's Day). Filming is underway in Glasgow, Scotland. "It's a joy to be able to write for this cast of some of the finest acting talent in the UK today," said Leather. "Our train is a real rollercoaster, a white-knuckle trip through the heart of Britain, and I'm delighted to have them join us for the ride."

The BBC first announced the show in December 2022. Set on a sleeper train from Glasgow to London, the real-time drama follows a government agency desperately trying to intervene as events rapidly escalate onboard. Two strangers (Cole and Roach) are forced to work together to save the lives of a disparate group of passengers as the train hurtles towards "what might quite literally be its final destination." Basically, it's like the serious version of Bullet Train. Nothing is more nightmarish to the British than being trapped on a train. Just ask anyone who has to take one in the UK these days.

Nightsleeper also includes Alex Ferns (The Devil's Hour), Sharon Small (The Bay), James Cosmo (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan), David Threlfall (Shameless), Daniel Cahill (The Control Room), Lois Chimimba (Vigil), Gabriel Howell (The Fence), Katie Leung (Harry Potter), Leah MacRae (Rosie Molloy Gives Up Everything), Ruth Madeley (Years and Years), Adam Mitchell (Mother's Day), Pamela Nomvete (Andor), Scott Reid (Maxine), Sharon Rooney (Jerk) and Parth Thakerar (Gangs of London).

Euston Managing Director Kate Harwood will executive produce with Leather, and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC. Jamie Magnus Stone (Doctor Who, Ten Pound Poms) and John Hayes (Dublin Murders) are the series directors. Leather wrote the scripts, with Laura Grace on episodes 4 and 5. Producing is Jonathan Curling (The Sister, Baghdad Central). Nightsleeper will run for six parts on BBC One and BBC iPlayer and probably end up on a streamer in the US.
