‘Encounters’ – Netflix Docuseries from Amblin TV Will Explore Otherworldly Phenomena

From Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, Vice Studios, and Boardwalk Pictures (“Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?”) comes the docuseries “Encounters,” which is headed to Netflix soon.

Deadline was the first to report the news this afternoon, writing that “Encounters has landed at Netflix, which will launch the four-parter on September 27, 2023.”

The four-part docuseries from director Yon Motskin (“Hustle”) is said to “explore four extraordinary true stories of encounters with otherworldly phenomena.”

Deadline details, “Each episode tells a single story: strange lights in the sky over small-town Texas; submersible space crafts haunting a coastal Welsh village; an alien encounter with schoolchildren in Zimbabwe; and non-human intelligence reportedly interfering with a nuclear power plant in Japan.

“Told from the perspective of firsthand experiencers – in the places where the sightings occurred – and guided by scientists and military personnel, the series highlights the profoundly human impact of these encounters on lives, families, and communities.”

Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, and Benny Safdie Conspire in First 'The Curse' Image

THE BIG PICTURE

  • A24 has released a new photo from the upcoming series The Curse, leaving viewers with more questions than answers.
  • The comedy series comes from the minds of Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, who serve as creators, writers, and stars, alongside Emma Stone.
  • The Curse will premiere at NYFF and air on Showtime at a later date.
Yes, this image is cursed. A24 has just released a new photo from the upcoming series The Curse and, well, we're left with some questions. The new image shows series stars Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone among others. The Curse is set to make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival this fall before airing sometime later on Showtime, though an official release date has not been set.

A Cursed New Home Improvement Show

The Curse is a comedy series that comes from the prolific, and frankly absurd, mind of Nathan Fielder who, along with starring in the series, also serves as creator and writer. Benny Safdie, of the Uncut Gems Safdie brothers, also stars in the series and serves as writer and creator on the show. The series will tell the story of a busy newlywed couple who are cursed amid attempts to conceive a child and film their troubled HGTV series 'Flipanthropy'. Fielder stars as Asher Siegel, the husband, and co-flipper to Emma Stone's Whitney Siegel. Benny Safdie plays a producer on the HGTV show. Starring along the main trio are Constance Shulman, Corbin Bernsen, and Barkhad Abdi.

The new image, seen above, shows an odd and obscured look into the new project, with the main trio of Fielder, Safdie, and Stone, standing outside a window. Asher and Whitney appear to be in some sort of confrontation while a long-haired Safdie stands between them, hand over his mouth. But the look at the confrontation is obscured by the main subject of the photo, a woman sitting on a couch in the room in which the image was taken. The woman looks out of frame with a neutral, if not unpleasant, expression on her face.

The image is unsettling and gives away very little insight into the overall plot of the show, but it does showcase Fielder's typical absurd, style. The Curse will premiere at NYFF this fall and does not yet have a release date on Showtime. Stay tuned at Collider for future updates and check out our interview with Adam Sandler on the next Safdie brothers project below.

Slice into the Making of "The Autopsy" in New 'Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities' Featurette [Exclusive]

THE BIG PICTURE

  • Guillermo del Toro's anthology series, Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, has been nominated for multiple Emmy awards, including Outstanding Sound Editing and Outstanding Cinematography for its episode titled "The Autopsy."
  • The featurette provides a behind-the-scenes look at how the episode pays homage to the horror genre and showcases the team's efforts to add depth to the story through visual and auditory elements.
  • In addition to the nominations for "The Autopsy," the series is also up for awards in categories such as Outstanding Production Design, Prosthetic Makeup, and Period Costumes. Del Toro and his team will have to wait until 2024 to find out their fate due to the Emmy Awards being postponed.
Having previously raked in three Academy Award and BAFTA wins along with two Golden Globes and a slew of other nominations, Guillermo del Toro is eyeing up this year’s Emmys for his next big award show sweep. Known for his vision behind critically acclaimed films including Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, it was his team-up with Netflix for last year’s anthology series, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities that piqued the interest of the annual television awards program. Breaking down the symphony of ideas, inspiration, and talents that brought the eight-episode season together, a featurette takes audiences behind the curtain.
Up for both Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special and Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, the show’s third episode, titled “The Autopsy,” is what the featurette slices into. Del Toro is joined by the Director of Photography Anastas Michos and Supervising Sound Editor Nelson Ferreira, as the trio breaks down how the episode was an homage to “the horror genre” and how they set out to add soul and depth to what could’ve been perceived as a dry tale. Speaking about the different approaches they took to make things pop in both a visual and auditory way while paying attention to even the smallest of details, it’s understandable how “The Autopsy” found itself up for two Emmys.
With clips rolling in the background, the curtain is essentially pulled back on how Michos and Ferreira joined forces with the episode’s director, David Prior (The Empty Man), to dig into the adaptation of Michael Shea’s story of the same name. From Michos’s neo-noir and at times single-camera approach to the way Ferreira thought long and hard about putting sound to some of the more gruesome parts and even coming up with an idea for what consciousness might sound like, the featurette is as close to a talkback as those at home can get.

What Other Emmys is Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of CuriositiesUp For?

With stars like Tim Blake Nelson, F. Murray Abraham, Martin Starr, Sofia Boutella, Rupert Grint, and Essie Davis paired with directors including Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Twilight), Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), and Keith Thomas (Firestarter), it’s not hard to see why Cabinet of Curiosities was such a success. Along with the nominations for “The Autopsy,” the series is also up for awards including Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More), Outstanding Main Title Design, Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup, Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, and Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
With the Emmys being pushed back to 2024 as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue, del Toro and the rest of his team will need to wait until then to find out their fate. Check out the fascinating featurette below.

Starz has given us a sneak peek into the upcoming six-part intense thriller called The Couple Next Door. The show is set to premiere in 2024 after being shown on Channel 4 in the UK. The psychological thriller has cast as its leads Sam Heughan, best known for Outlander, and Eleanor Tomlinson from Poldark, alongside Jessica De Gouw and Alfred Enoch. The filming for the series concluded earlier this summer in both Leeds and Belgium.

The series follows the story of Evie (Tomlinson) and Pete (Enoch) as they move into an upscale neighborhood. They step into a world of nosy neighbors and the pressures of keeping up with social status. However, they find an unexpected friendship with their neighbors, Danny (Heughan), a confident traffic cop, and his wife Becka (De Gouw), a glamorous yoga instructor. Over time, these two couples become closer, and eventually, on a significant night, their relationships take a sexual turn that will forever alter their lives.

The show explores dark psychological themes within the context of suburbia, revealing the consequences of pursuing one's deepest desires. It is directed by Dries Vos and written by David Allison. With its six episodes, the series promises to be an emotional roller coaster that highlights the mysteries that lie behind closed doors. The executive producers include Jo McGrath, Walter Iuzzolino, and Alison Kee, while Jen Burnet serves as the producer.

An Addictive, Emotional Roller-Coaster

At the time the series was announced, Heughan—who had previously worked with Starz on Outlander—released a statement saying: “l’m thrilled to be working with Eagle Eye Drama and director Dries Vos again and adding a third series with my STARZ family. Dries has a unique visual flair and I’m sure we’re going to make something special.”

Tomlinson added: “Evie is an exciting challenge for me — a girl whose world is turned upside down as she navigates devastating trauma, which isn’t helped by unresolved issues from her past", while Channel 4's head of drama Caroline Hollick said: “This series is an addictive, emotional roller-coaster with something to say about modern sexual mores, with an electrifying cast that will set our screens on fire.”

The Couple Next Door is produced by Eagle Eye Drama and distributed internationally by Beta Film. Fans in the UK can catch it on Channel 4 this fall, while viewers in the US and Canada will see it on Starz in 2024.
