Hi all,

Like to find out what is the most cost effective way to invest in gold for investment amount of 50k SGD. I do not want to own and safe keep physical gold myself. Understand that i can invest through SPDR gold ETF which is under SGX or through UOB gold certificate. Which one is more cost effective or is there an even more cost effective gold investment solution? TIA!

Gold through NYSE exchange, using interactive brokers, is the cheapest, especially if you either invest consistently in foreign shares or have 100k USD in the account.

Note that there is also a spread when it comes to buying and selling physical gold.

ETF is better than certificate.

ETF can sell online, Certificate has to go to bank to sell.

ETF price is more transparent, Certificate bank state the price.

ETF has no yearly fee, Certificate has yearly fee.

U can check out bullionstar....they have a gold account option....where u can own gold without having to store them without 3rd party risks like ETF.

Go read up on MF Global if you dont know what i meant by 3rd party risk.

If you mean cost effective as in getting the most leverage for a rising gold price with certain limitation on risk, I would say reputable mining stocks listed in US market. You would want to buy big mining companies with stable gold output in stable political locations instead of junior ones listed on SGX.

Alternatively, GLD listed on SGX or SPDR ETF

Alternatively, gold price is highly negatively correlated to S&P 500 and to certain extent the Straits Time Index, you can short the index to get a somewhat similar gain/loss in dollar terms.

The SPDR gold ETF - stock code O87 - is the most cost-effective way to buy gold. It's that simple.

Gold is very good as war currency, based on current situation perhaps it is good to keep some physical gold with you.
