Hi Guys, not sure if I'm posting at the right place, mods can move my thread if there's somewhere else more appropriate.

Anyway, does anyone know what's the benchmark salary for Investment Analysts for Fresh Graduates? I've tried searching online but results reaped like at least $5k/mth, which seems exaggerating.

Thanks in advance for any replies. :)

I once met a fresh graduate with degree from Cambridge, he was working in an international bank for an investment analyst. In other words, you cannot become investment analyst as fresh grad in some international banks, you have to work your way up.

Other banks probably use the term more loosely, that sort of bank, investment analyst is probably some low-ranking job, as everyone else is "Vice-President".

So looking at online info is difficult... you need to speak to someone at the firm/bank to find out what 'level' of job is investment analyst at that place.

By the way, looking at fresh grad salary for SMU business, quite close to $5k a month (the figure is an average, and banks are usually known to have 'above average' pay). Furthermore since they just started, I guess they are just reporting their monthly salary. With the normal financial sector bonuses, should reach $5k:

  • SMU Business Management (4-year programme) Cum Laude and above – $4,116 (4,500) [from salary.sg]

Are there any kind souls working in banks care to share this info with me?

I'm also looking for such position in MNCs' Investment Departments.
If anyone can provide some insights on the route to that position and its benchmark salary for my resume submission. :/

Ohh. Do you have a specific job title or something for the initial position?

So I know what I can search for on those job portals.

My younger brother's friend, who happens to be the top student (deans list) of his batch - for the SMU double degree in business, was paid 9-10K when he graduated.

Joined Goldman as an investment banker. Not entirely sure of his title, but quite sure of his pay. btw, he works from 9am to 10pm daily... sometimes even later.

I think the "Investment Analyst" role you keep seeing is what the banks portray to the outside world/media. Everyone who gives some sort of opinion on the markets or to clients is known as that - look to bloomberg tv and you'll see that quite often.

On the local level, i think you would probably be looking for a graduate analyst role. The hierarchy in most banks are analyst - associate - AVP - VP - D - MD. Most foreign banks i know of usually only take in analyst through their graduate programs. I've had friends who went in as a normal hire and their corporate grades were 1 level below the grad analyst role.

As for new "investment analyst" advising clients - PB side usually has them tag onto existing RMs where they are trained as an Assistant RM before proceeding to having their own clients (bank's clients actually).

Pay-wise, the figures are close to and above 5 for the foreigns, i've heard of 6 for a couple. And these are not your IB pays, those should be a good 30-40% more.

Yep, I personally know someone from a local uni that joined a foreign private bank starting basic pay $9-10k. Like your brothers friend, he is top of his class. From what I know only a handful of fresh graduates make it into these kind of jobs with this kind of pay level.

I don't think these jobs are on job portals. Usually if you are of this caliber, you would have won quite a few awards and prizes already. The banks would already have you in their sights..

every year, there are a handful of local grads that will be hired as investment banking analyst. just do a search on linkedin. These ppl do exist and they are drawing insane amount.

but u need to be the best of the best to land such roles. and u have to start building up your path towards it the moment you enter university.

I tend to agree with the others that most international banks do not hire fresh grad as investment analysts. For example, I seriously doubt that you find Goldman Sachs hiring fresh grad as investment analyst

Goldman already has more than enough Harvard and Ivy League MBA job applicants... why would they bother with fresh grad for investment analyst post. Fresh grad start as management associate or trainee or some equivalent job title.

However, I do not discount the fact that some lesser banks, become they cannot compete with the big banks, offer inflated titles when the reality is the job scope is just entry level.

+1 to the fact that the ivies are taking up the IB/IM/ER roles in places like GS but don't discredit the local unis so much guys? I know a few from the locals in those roles as well though their credentials just screams overachiever.

As for inflated titles, I'm not sure if banks these days will pay you so much just to sit around to do nothing, given the amount of cost-cutting going around.

There are plenty of Singaporeans who worked for Goldman Sachs. The discussion is what position they enter if they are only a fresh grad. Feel free to find me a fresh grad who enter as investment analyst in Goldman.

Even in those 3 job postings, there's a huge difference between their functions as well as pay grade.

I think the differing views over here refer to analyst as a corporate grade versus analyst as a job scope.

Say, Meredith Whitney, a CIO for a HF in NYC - she appears to the public as an investment analyst but I'm sure as hell she isn't anywhere near the analyst corporate grade.
