Back Ups

Before committing to any updates. It's of utmost importance that we backup our data in both iCloud and iTunes.

Photos

Do you have tons of images saved in your Photos? If you choose to restore your iPhone, you might want to clear out your Photos by off loading your pictures to your computer. This will greatly shorten the time it takes for your iPhone to completely finish restoring from either iCloud or a local backup

On a Windows Computer

• Head to My Computer
• Double click on the logo for the device to browse its camera folders.
• Navigate to [iOS Device]\Internal Storage\DCIM\100Apple

On a Mac, you may choose to manage your Photos with the iPhoto suite. Alternatively, you may wish to make use of Image Capture found in your Mac to copy the photos manually to your Mac.

If you have tons of photos and are find it hard to manage, you might want to upload them to a photo organiser such as Everpix * on your Computer.

How to backup your iPhone to iCloud.

• Settings > iCloud
• iCloud > Storage & Backup
• Storage & Backup > Back Up Now

How to backup your iPhone locally.

If you haven't, please be sure to have the most updated copy of iTunes. You can fetch the latest version of iTunes via this link (Be sure to check for updates again once iOS 7 is released)

Before embarking on this guide, please bring up the sidebar in iTunes.

• iTunes > View
• View > Show Sidebar

To backup your iPhone

• Plug in your iPhone, on the left hand column, your iPhone should be shown.
• Right click on your iPhone > Transfer Purchases (if your iPhone was previously synced with another computer, you'll be prompted to authenticate this computer with your AppleID.)
• Once that is complete, right click on your iPhone > Back up.

Updating your iPhone

Over the air

The easy way.

Unlike the Android platform where the OTA function is barely used due to fragmentation. Apple introduced over the air (OTA) updates beginning iOS 5 and millions of users have been using this handy tool to keep their iOS Devices up to date.

Please ensure that you're on WiFi before committing to an OTA update as it would use up a huge chunk of your data quota.

To update to iOS 8 on your iPhone when it's released

• Settings
• Generals
• Software Update

Locally

• Plug in your iPhone
• Launch iTunes
• Click on your iPhone
• Check for updates

One more thing !IMPORTANT!

If you chose to update your iPhone over your existing version (OTA or iTunes). You are advised to do the following to reset your iPhone settings. This will not remove any data, only settings such as keyboard, Siri etc will be reseted.

On your iPhone

• Settings > General
• General > Reset
• Reset > Reset All Settings (DO NOT HIT ERASE ALL CONTENTS AND SETTINGS)

If you have iMessage enabled.

Settings > Messages > Send as SMS.

If you have recurring alarms.
You'll have to add them again.

FAQ

When would the OS be released?
Probably on 19th Sept at 1am. But it's just a guess.

Should I restore or update?
I would recommend you to do a restore over an update.

Should I restore over iCloud or iTunes
Both are the same as long as your reset all settings.

I'm restoring at an extremely slow rate. Why?
Remove your OpenDNS/Google DNS and use your ISP's DNS. Apple uses Akamai servers to deliver you updates and Akamai detects your location based off your DNS. Using a local DNS would allow Akamai to use a server that's closer to your region

My battery...

Try these.

Settings > Generals > Privacy > Location Services > System Services

Turn off

1. Location-Based iAds
2. Popular Near Me
3. Traffic
4. Frequent Locations > Off (This will improve battery life, a lot. If you happen to work in areas with little to no 3/4G or WiFi)

Settings > General > Accessibility >

1. Increase Contrast > Yes (Reduces transparency)
2. Reduce Motion > Yes (Reduces motion)
