E2 Texas S2, E2 SilverAsh S3, E2 Eyafjalla S3 all skill level 7 mastery 3.
Probably going to E2 Lappland and Exusiai next for the trading room synergy with Texas.

While I am not F2P, this game is indeed very F2P friendly.
There are lots of video guides out there how to complete content using low tier characters. I am now in the process of maxing out the low tier characters to try completing content without any 6*.

3/4* solid units - melantha, ansel, myrrh, beagle, courier, gavial, kroos, Jessica, plume, fang, vigna, lava. Many 3/4* are actually really strong. 5* is where you get luxury/niche units normally

Good or not is depend on players. So far the game is quite lenient to f2p players meaning you can clear quest easily with the 4* n below units.

You can try watching those YouTube videos for tips which I regretted not to.
