Just a point to note.

You will have to train all heroes as some heroes will require specific hero to be in the party in order to recruit.

After reading thru the reddit posts, there's a general consensus.

Always get and use Deborah, use the Expedition coins to get Mu, she replaces Chris.

Top tier:
These are the heroes that you should definitely start farming (at least now for this patch), they have good stats and skills that could definitely give you an edge in PVP.
Deborah
Was the reigning queen before patch v0.514 and still the reigning queen of PVP damage dealers. She has amazing offenseive stats and awesome defensive stats for a ranged damage dealer. Consider farming her as you get to Tezen as her AOE kit is best for PVE.
Mu
Mu is the example of an overloaded kit done right. She has a stun, and AOE that also heals allies caught. The only downside is her low mana pool and rightfully so... because who wants a spammable stun and a spammable heal.
Jack
New to this list now is the werewolf Jack. His defensive stats in line with the fact that his kit has lifesteal component make him quite durable. He also can duel well since his 3rd skill has a %HP damage. So consider farming 54 of his genes once you get to Vulcan.
Carrot
The reason why Carrot is on this list is because 1) the defensive formula was nerfed, and 2) there is a lack of Scissors-type tanks in the meta right now. Her skills start out weak but you should consider upgrading them, her 3rd skill could one-shot Rock-types like Serendi and even Kai.

Honorable mention top-tier:
Momo
Momo is basically a Rock-type Carrot. This clockwork mechanism of death deals good amount of damage and his 2nd skill increases his attack by a %, making its hits even painful.

Mid tier:
These are the heroes that aren't as good as the top-tier, but since they are easier to get and they're at your party, you stick with them anyway.
Serendi
Serendi was once on the top tier because of her 100% charm that lets you watch while your enemies kill each other. She fell off to the mid-tier after her atrocious nerf on v0.514 that drop the charm rate to 30% a. She is still decent but requires investing on her and upgrading her skills.
Jenny
Jenny was also once a top-tier damager as she could easily outdamage anyone in this game, you just throw your wide-ass 3rd skill that covers half of the map and BOOM! 100% crit rate. But after her nerfs in v0.514 she fell of to the mid-tier list. Like Serendi, she requires upgrading skills now to be as effective as her former self.
Sraka
Sraka, after the v0.514 changes, is surprisingly good, he has a good attack stat, 5 movement, and his 1st skill has a chance to stun that goes higher at a very low cost upgrade.
Kai
The buff that was given to Kai's 3rd skill made him rise from ****-tier to mid-tier instantly. Since the defense formula was MODIFIED (or Nexon's definition of NERF), his 3rd skill ignores most of it at a wide-range and at a relatively low mana cost. He still needs some load on his 2 other skills to become top-tier.
