iPad Air or Laptop?

So my laptop is likely not to live pass 2015, I'm thinking of getting an iPad (Air?) in replacement for daily video watching, net surfing and reading.

I worked my laptop really hard; I can surf net on weekends for 20hours. And I need Microsoft Excel. While iPad allows me to surf net, it doesn't have Office Apps and I'm not sure iPad is strong enough to withstand my torture.

But with iPad I can surf net everywhere I bring along, which also comes with the cost of subscribing additional SIM card.

I went to the neighbourhood retailers and they quoted Air for $980 while the Apple Store is selling at $1008. Why is there a difference? Are the ones from neighbourhood retailers genuine?

iPad was never a replacement for laptop!

you say your laptop not likely to live pass 2015, means now still working. so you can get the ipad air now to reduce the torture on your laptop ?

Yes it's still in workable condition at home. But the battery doesn't charge itself anymore and I doubt I can use it at Starbucks.

really boils down to what a person use laptop for. If it's surfing, email, music, photos, office, ipad can replace laptop, but must use Apple's office apps.

if really must use MS office heavily, then just get the latest windows tablet. u can do all of the above.

Depends on your needs.
If you type a lot then you probably would prefer a manual keyboard.
But then again you could buy an add on keyboard for the iPad as well.
You decide.

I've both and i prefer use laptop most of the time. I use ipad only when i'm out.

Msoffice got similar one too on ios like iWork's and those quick office
Text editing
Typing want shoiok go get a wireless kb

But if want do more serious works. Laptop till best

No one in the right mind would buy iPad for productivity.
With some many new hybrid full win 8 tablets like t100 with a keyboard in the market for less than 700bucks it would be absolute silly to go for iPad at 1000bucks price pt unless you r an apple fan XD of course.

For surfing net, reading and watching movie, iPad is def a good choice. However, it usually only complements with a desktop/laptop, especially when you are using it for work as well. There are applications that allows you to use Excel on the iPad, but they are not as good as running it on the PC.

IMHO:

iPad or any tablet device - Excellent for reading anything and web surfing mobility. Also excellent as a music player (with great battery) and a movie player. Also a good device to kill time (by playing mobile games). You can lay down on your bed doing these stuffs. It is not as good as a laptop in any document and content creation, or if you need the power of a laptop to do more serious stuffs. Connecting a BT keyboard to your iPad kills battery too..

Laptop: Can do everything that an iPad can do and more, except its form factor does not allow you to be very mobile and certainly cannot hug it to sleep.

Someone doesn't believe it can happen. All in one is the end goal. Windows may not succeed now. But i suspect eventually it would.

Ppl used to think we can't game on laptops and things have changed.

Yes..in near future, things will converge... u see Asus transformer now, Even Apple is coming out with a 12.6" iPad Pro in 2014.

But serious gaming and extreme graphics still cannot be done on slim laptops, as compared to PC.
