iPhone 4 With No Sound Problem

anyone with iPhone 4 on iOS 7.0.4 having problems where where there is no sound when music, video or even text notification alerts? the only sound it can play is when a call comes through. the other things is, the volume level is disabled (greyed off) when the Volume button is pressed.

i've googled and seems like this problem is not uncommon and people are having different solutions to resolved it. and some are not successful with the solutions as well.

i've tried the solutions given to no avail. still can't get the sound to be played. i've done DFU, restored, reset, sent to QCD for diagnosis and still unsuccessful.

what could be the problem? hardware? software?

I had the exact same problem on a iPhone4 (ios 6.1).
The only solution that work was this:

Only if your iPhone is jailbroken
- Use iExplorer (Mac) or iFile (on the iPhone).
- Navigate to System / Library / LaunchDaemons.
- Look for this file "com.apple.iapd.plist" and delete it. You might want to back it up before hand.
- Reboot your iPhone.

One caveat to this method is that afterwards, it doesn't work with my Philips docking station anymore, ie the sound doesn't come out from the Philips speaker.

ok, let's say i jailbreak the iPhone... can i just rename that file instead of deleting it?

i also did some reading on this issue and looks like this is caused by the fact that the iPhone still thinks it is in docking mode or connected to some AirPlay device.

what i just don't understand is that... why the hell the iPhone will want to think of that? and to be honest, i don't even have any docking station or AirPlay device. it just baffles me that the iPhone will just go into such mode and i believe it only happens to iPhone 4/4s.

iOS 7 wasn't built for older & slower phones like the 4/4s. It's more for the 5 & 5s/c. Recommended solutions may or may not work. Even if they work, they may not be permanent.

Try calling Apple technical helpdesk, tell them your problem & see if they are willing to give u a 1-to-1 exchange. Doesn't matter if your phone is out of warranty or if you've never bought Applecare before. If you don't try you'll never know.

I actually called Apple a few weeks back to check on such out of warranty 1-to-1 exchanges because I wanted to check if they would do it should there be anything wrong with my daughter's iphone 4 after upgrading to ios7.0.4. They said no promises but it'll be a case by case basis provided it's a hardware issue. Luckily at the last minute my daughter decided to buy the 5s.

tried that... no improvements seen.

anyway, i've called Apple as advised by gkhchay and the guy has escalated my case.

For this method, the iPhone has to be jailbroken. Else you will not have access to the necessary directory.

And yes, you can just rename the file.

so, the problem with you phone is the charging connector?

my phone is having the same symptoms as yours:

1. when a call comes through, there is ringing.
2. when text comes through, no sound alert.
3. when playing music/video, no sound to be heard.

and i also noticed some other odd behaviour:

1. when phone is sleeping and text comes through, there is sound alert.
2. when phone is awake and text comes through, there is no sound alert.
3. when on speaker phone, there is sound.
4. phone is asleep, press power button to wake phone up, pull the Control Centre up; the Volume slider is visible and active. after 2 seconds, it just disappears.

anyway, i spoke to the Senior Advisor from Apple and she said she will discuss with her colleagues on how to handle this issue. i told her it's not fair for me to pay for a replacement phone when the upgrading of iOS screwed me over.

ok, the outcome of my case is... this is after much explaining on my side and my refusal to pay for an exchange for something that is not my fault.

they said it's hardware and the problem could have been there all along and it surfaced after upgrading to iOS 7.0.4.

i told them it could be software as i don't have this problem with previous iOS versions.

to cut the story short, Apple will make this an exception and have my iPhone 4 exchanged for 1-for-1. so, i'm happy with the outcome

the number is 6835-1812... it can be obtained from Contact Apple for support and service

the set i got was on iOS 6.1.3 and they mentioned it's not a refurbish set. it's not brand new but it has never been used before.

I just upgraded my ip4 from ios5 to ios7 and did the jb too. No such problem.

Now trying out cydia apps, few apps crashes though.

I have this problem for a long time, think since I upgraded to iOS 7 also. But didn't register that it's a problem with the os, and lived with it. Just came acrossed this thread today.

Anybody else got a solution from Apple for this issue?


I have the same problems as u ....in the end I found out that the contact inside the phone is no good and had it replaced at one of those ah beng shop...it works like the home button that after long usage ...the contact became no good...after I replaced that cable...it works fine till now
