Iphone 4s dead! help

I am the 1st owner and had been using this phone for almost 3 yrs now. I never had any issue with the phone all this while. But half an hour ago when i recd a msg tone i was staring at a blank screen. Tried to power off and recharge battery but of no help. Looks like it gone dead. Is it time to replace a new battery?. txs
