[iPhone 5] Wifi problem with 5GHz

Though an old phone, but hope someone can help me with this.

I am having erratic speed whenever my iPhone 5 is connected to my AC wifi network.

The download speed can range from 10 Mbps to 50 Mbps. The upload speed is clocked much higher than the download speed, ranging from 50 Mbps to 80 Mbps. Found fix online, which was to turn off wifi networking, which helps a little. But the dl/ul speed of 50/80 is still different by a lot.

When my phone is connected to my 2.4GHz network, the dl/ul speed of 30/30 was still comparable.


Many said that it was due to iOS 8, and am wondering anyone managed to fix the issue.

I'm on iOS 8.1.1 btw.

in that case, when my iP5 is connected to the 5GHz network, am i expected to get faster connection speed than connected to the 2.4GHz network?

it would depend on how close you are to the router / wi-fi source. 5ghz usually has less "strength" to travel thru walls.

my measured speed are taken around 2.5 m away from the router with no obstacle in between.

so far what brand of router did your purchase on?
Mine is TPLINK at home and ASUS at office. Both like what you mention slow on iPhone and iPad after the upgrade. Some forum suggest using wpa/wpa2 with due tkip &AES if possible.

Try updating to 8.1.2 and see how it goes.
