Hi guys. I found out that my MacBook Air running Yosemite takes a livery long time identifying my iPhone 8 under airdrop. And it takes a long time to identify the MBA from my 8 too.

I have to rule out hardware issues as both SE and 7 can identify and be discovered by both the 8 and the MBA.

I noted the following; when and if my MBA is able to discover my 8, it showed up as “My Name” with a greyed our text “iPhone” instead of the name or my iPhone 8. The display photo of the identified 8 is also showing the photo i set for my MBA user personalisation. The SE and 7 belonging to my mom identified my 8 by its given device name.

I believe this is a software issue and reformatting the phone doesn’t help. Anyone can advise?

Are you able to upgrade to High Sierra?
iirc, Airdrop only became much reliable after Sierra or something.

That could be a last resort. MBA is from 2014 so I’m not sure if it can affect the usage.

But it’s very strange that the MBA can discover the 7 and SE which don’t share the same iCloud info as my MBA. It’s just that the names showing between my 8 and MBA are not the names of the respective devices.

It’s not the airdrop isn’t working too. It just takes a ridiculously long time to discover and be discovered. Could it be that they share the same iCloud account?

Nah iirc, you need to be signed into iCloud for Airdrop to work.
It doesn't matter if it's the same account...

hmm could you try setting the Airdrop discoverability to "Everyone" and try again?
Also have you tired rebooting both devices?

Yeah did restart my MBA and reboot and reformatted my 8 too to no avail.
