iPhone Bluetooth disconnects when connected to CarPlay

I was driving today when a call came through. My CarPlay was connected. With hands free, I can actually pick up the phone by pressing on the steering wheel but I realised I cannot hear anything.

Much later, I realised it is because my Bluetooth was not connected. Tried to connect and then I realise that if my iPhone is connected to the car via usb, the Bluetooth is auto disconnected.

So my question is

how do we take phone calls hands free via CarPlay? I read online that CarPlay and Bluetooth cannot be connected simultaneously. I don’t have any earpieces. Just want the voice through the car speakers.

Turned out it was just my phone paired wrongly. Went to Mandai service centre to get it checked out. Fortunately the tech also owns an iPhone
