i always put it on airplane mode to reduce battery drain on idling.

i will just lock the phone... the draining is very minimal.. a few % only.. so didnt bother to kill apps or off it.

I don't even switch to airplane mode. The drain on 6 plus is so minimal that I kept my wifi on even with push/fetch mail settings plus whatsapp spams by friends, the overnight battery drops between 1-2% nia (~8hrs).

Using 6 Plus so no need. At the most put Airplane mode to stop unwanted calls.
