iPhone usage in USA

I was wondering if anyone of you travelled with the iPhone to the US (L.A.) recently?

What is the most sensible strategy to go about having data connection in the US with the iPhone? Getting a pre-paid or signing up a mobile package with the local telcos or? Main uses will probably be Google Maps and email access.
