It starts when the phone is purchased
Apple discontinued the iPhone 5 in September of 2013, so it means the warranty is over even if he bought it in September 2013(highly unlikely) and the box is still sealed.
You can check the warranty period here by keying in the serial on the box https://getsupport.apple.com/ProductSelector.action but it seems to be down now
Most likely the phone is used and the box resealed.
