That's a presentation fail not a hardware fail

Someone forgot to enter the passcode when the phone is rebooted for the demo that's why it's disabled
If you reboot your phone now, you will be prompted to enter your passcode before Touch ID can be used

It’s the temporary rejection of the Touch/Face ID authentication and needs the Passcode to enable them back as it displayed as “Your passcode is required to enable Face ID” or on devices with Touch ID: “Your passcode is required to enable Touch ID”.

It is similar to using a fingerprint that is not registered and trying 5 times to unlock the iPhone without any success.

Cause when rebooting the device, it will display as “Touch ID requires your passcode when iPhone restarts” instead. ;)

This is my key concern. Of all the features I think a considerable amount of the price we are paying goes to this tech. No doubt it's impressive but it seems the tech is not really matured. This demo failure did impact my decision to get the phone. I am not paying close to $2K to help apple test their tech.

I think Apple would implement this feature in their demo devices and would just be like testing the Touch ID.

Well your expectation might not match reality.

You do need to consider that a fresh tech can never be solidly stable at launch. You have to give it some time to mature over time.

Fingerprint scanner does fail at times isn't it?

The rumour was that Apple wanted to include touchid under the screen but was unable to do so by this year.

Maybe this will be the only iPhone without touchid when they reintroduce it back next year. There are so many scenarios that touch id will work better than face id

Usually when Apple removes a feature, they will not add it back to the next gen device. They will only improve on the current feature or introduce a new feature altogether.

Well they didn't remove it. They kept it for the iPhone 8. There are articles saying that they were trying till the last min for "iPhone 8" (iPhone X). Depending on whether they can get that tech implemented, touchid might make a come back.

There is another explanation for the "failed demo". The reason due to first usage after boot up. Like Touch ID. Prompt password upon first boot up. Well guess we have to see what X users feedback after using the phone in Early nov.

I’m wary of that of cos but if Face ID can proved to be better and more secured than Touch ID, Apple will not add Touch ID back (not their style anyway). iPhone 8 still retain Touch ID because it’s still pretty similar to iPhone 7 while keeping the cost down.

As Apple mentioned, iPhone X is the future and the future iPhones will follow iPhone X features and design language.

Tonight, I was able to contact Apple. After examining the logs of the demo iPhone X, they now know exactly what went down. Turns out my first theory in this story was wrong--but my first UPDATE theory above was correct: "People were handling the device for stage demo ahead of time," says a rep, "and didn't realize Face ID was trying to authenticate their face. After failing a number of times, because they weren't Craig, the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was to require his passcode." In other words, "Face ID worked as it was designed to."

I have faith that faceid will work great. But there are instances that touch id is better Eg People who needs to cover their face, be it religious reasons or haze or cold countries

Having said that I will still buy 😂

It was stated on Singtel.
Currently, eSIM technology is only available in Singapore on the Samsung Gear S3 frontier (LTE). Sign up for Singtel’s MobileShare plan for your eSIM at $10.70 with a 12-month contract

MobileShare likely will have another number for the SIM as I have another SIM under mobileshare for my mom inlaw.

However, Apple said during Keynote that the AW3 cellular will have the same number as the iPhone so it will ring or message will come in at same number as the iPhone.

Saw on Apple.com that AW3 cellular need to be under the same telco as the iPhone to work..

Thus my take is Singapore telco probably have not have that yet, or even if Singtel has it, Apple probably want to have all 3 telco able to do it before launching AW3 CL here so can sell more....

Well,, I am sure we will know it when the US folks get their hand on the AW3 CL,,, soon lots of youtube video will pop up.
