Hi, came across this South Korean company selling the iRobot 539 for $399 with 2 virtual walls on Gmarket. The price seems too good to be true. Any comments? Also I'm a first time buyer. Am buying it for a student care centre's use. Thought this would really be a great help to our cleaning auntie. But I'm also concern if it'll work in a classroom environment with many tables and chairs in the room(estimate 20 chairs, 8 tables in a 3x6m classroom - that's over a hundred 'legs' in a small room!) I would think you will need to place all the chairs on the tables before you use the robot. Not sure about irobot though as it will bump into all the table legs.

If it is all hard floor I would buy this RoboMop Softbase :: Softbase dusts all types of smooth floor surfaces, Robomop .I have it and in some ways it is better than roomba. Doesnt get stuck nor require cleaning of its brushes, simple operation and very quiet. Since I have cats, i use this as a pre -clean before the roomba/scooba and its great. Economical too( groupon priced at $50 with 100 cleaning pads) Downside is that it uses the static cleaning cloth/pads which is disposed after every use( can flip. thou). Oh and its a dumb bot in sense that it cleans by random movement so may not clean every spot in 1 cleaning but cleans the corner and areas which the roomba/scooba doesnt like odd corners/edges.

Even for normal household environment with maybe a dining area & some chairs in study/computer room, it's recommended to tidy up uneccessary obstacles.

Having 20 chairs, each 4 legs, we're talking 80 poles for Roomba to go round & round, like dancing in coconut pasture (minus the Hindi music).

So my answer is, u sorta can just let Roomba do its thing, but "help the lil' fella" if u could, by at least lifting up "some" chairs.

Its true, my 2 x 535 fr HSN are also fr 2007, it's still alive till today. In fact, they are giving me less problem than my current 581.

I went to check my order history as my Discovery was from Amazon....It was indeed Mar 2007! Well, I have been contemplating changing to LG if I retire this one...but still its hardy and if can repair at a small cost, I would continue with it...I guess buying iRobot is also cos we have local support and parts are everywhere....

With so much tables and chairs in a classroom size, my advice is don't use a robovac. It ain't gonna help unless u gonna stack chairs and tables all up before using it.

Hehehe ... Our robots is 5+ yo and still counting. I had the same idea of itching to try out LG too but I still have brand new 550 sitting in the storeroom ! I guess I am gonna stick to iRobot for a while.

It will be interesting if someone will do a classroom challenge with all the robovacs out in the market. See which robovac can conquer the classroom challenge!

Cleanliness: I believe Roomba users will rate Roomba very high on cleanliness. It was after all designed for USA environment to tackle pet hair on carpet (the ultimate nightmare).
Roomba picks up things that no other robotic vacuum can, thanks to Patented dual brush system, eg. Screws & nuts, and some extreme examples I've came across... magnetic alphabet for kids, a whole packet of Chilli flakes from Pizza delivery.

Cost: Who doesn't want cheap, but there are many China no-brands that are cheap, these are OEM & later some retailer put their own logo, eg. QQ (aka Metapo), FunBeat (aka Paranello), iNova (aka Dirt Devil Whiskers).
iRobot Roomba is cost effective in long run cos it's very hardy & parts are widely available.
Sure there are other brands like Neato, LG Roboking, iClebo, Samsung, but wait til u try to source for parts... good luck!

Durability: iRobot Roomba is very durable, I've been selling it for 4 yrs so I know, I've came across many people who have used even before me, those who take care tend to have long lasting robot. Those who are careless or simply do not follow proper usage as stated in manual will get hiccups & they come to me for rescue. Of course there are those who simply did nothing wrong, but it malfunctions, no worries... there's always me.

That is the first device I use before roomba but mine is not the softbase one. With the amount of dog fur I have, this fellow makes a mess instead of helping me.

If $50 is what you want, I have the Robo Sweeper for sale which use 4 AA batteries.

I've own the Cleanmate QQ1 before and Roomba will still cleans better than it. I simply dispose it after the battery's dead. If you looking for other brands like Neato & iClebo, no worries too as I have all parts for support, LG will be coming soon once I've negotiate for their warranty support as the parts are simply hard or totally unable to get in any open market.

This robo mop is certainly not as clean as roomba & scooba, which i have. It is good for getting the fur/dust/hair out before the roomba does its thing. Fur & hair is the nemesis of the roomba messing up the brushes, which I have to clean. Kinda defeats the purpose of a robot cleaner.

The soft base is good to get into the corners which the roomba/scooba doesnt reach and because it quiet, i run it often but this is not a subsititute for a good robot cleaner, just reduces your work load for having you clean out your cleaner as often.

Of cos iRobot Roomba.....model wise, up to individual budget but all model are good, have been using mine for 1year+ and still a workhorse. Everytime i am back home, am so glad that the floor is free from dust...
