Irritating Problem

Ok, I have searched the internet for a solution and like an illness, there are many theories for this. Also, if there is a similar thread to this, go ahead and delete this and redirect me to that thread.

Recently, my PC has been behaving strangely. Under graphical load (playing Dota 2), my computer display will go off suddenly. No, it is not my monitor because it says "No display detected". This means that the monitor is still receiving, but nothing is transmitting images anymore. This lead me to my GPU.

Before that, this is my specs:

• i7-2600
• Asus P8z68-vlx
• 4x4GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM
• Leadtek GTX 580 3GB
• Corsair TX750M PSU
• 120GB Corsair Force SSD
• 1TB WD Blue
• 4x 120MM Fans
• 2x 140MM Fans

this system is 3 years old

As far as I know, my GPU is working fine. But this is purely an assumption, because when I am about to tell you will probably make sense.

1. GPU overheating: Little chance having that happen with my 6x cooling fans
2. My hypothesis is that when under load, the GPU draws more power from my PSU
3. My PSU, unable to cope with the extra load, cuts off power to my GPU, thus resulting in a no display; running cpu situation
4. When I'm surfing internet, nothing like that happens.
5. Nvidia Driver problem probably isn't this inconsistent (like act up with its under load and don't when its not)
6. Not to mention, the power consumption of my 6 Fans, WYSE antique keyboard and a logitech mouse is going to put a load on the PSU

When do you guys think? I wouldn't mind spending 150 bucks on a new PSU.

TX750 powering just one 580 is nothing much you can prob get away with 600w or less even.

Fans draw next to nothing unless youre using delta fans LOL

I have face this issue once last week. Not sure it will help you as mine i have detach the cooler before and use my own thermal paste.

As long as the gpu is on load it will just go blackout. Meaning to say pc still running. Monitor turned off.

What i did was, i removed the cooler and i found the thermal paste is a little too much. It was covering the embedded components beside the cores. Suspected that when at high temperatures which is on load it could have some how shorted it.

I took it out and cleaned it off. Managed to remove most of it. Once remove and reapply the thermal paste. Everything is back to normal.

Not sure if your gpu still have warranty. But if you do not have warranty you can try the above. At your own risk.

Most likely is GPU issue.

Try using another port?
Go download HWMonitor and Heaven benchmark. Run both and see what's the highest temp u got.
Best if u have spare monitor, graphics card and PSU.
Try to change one component at a time to isolate the faulty one.

unikely the psu, 750w is more than enough for all of that. do check your gpu temperatures under load with gpuz or hwmonitor

Fresh install drivers

Unplug all PSu cables and reattach
Unplug gpu and reattach

Monitor volts and heat

3.3v dropping will cause gpu to cut out

I took it out and cleaned it off. Managed to remove most of it. Once remove and reapply the thermal paste. Everything is back to normal.

I forgot to add. Last week I ran into a severe driver problem. It was so bad my computer goes into Blue screen every time it boots up into the windows desktop. I ended up reformatting my C: and reinstalling the driver directly from my Leadtek disc. I did not update the driver as the newer Nvidia drivers have already caused me pain so great I'd rather give birth. It works fine with the old driver until yesterday when I was on Dota 2. I played for nearly 1.5 hours before the problem started.
And I dare not update the drivers. It is like "Driving a Maserati down a dead-end street".
Which is why I wished it was a PSU problem. 3 Years and 750W may have dropped to 60% efficiency already.

But I dont have the receipt anymore.
I got it from Tradepac on 2011 April 25.. On the box got write 3 years warranty.. Still have the box and everything inside..

Check whether is your gpu behind got any sticker that states warranty date.

Some distro honor warranty sticker alone.... cdl for gigabyte does that

Not all distros will insist on the box, as long as you have the receipt. Without receipt. Depends on who you meet that day.

I dont have the receipt. It has been a long long time since I saw the receipt. The only thing I have now to verify the date of purchase is photographs (with date) of the part when it was bought. And the serial number if they are able to dig out.

I hope I dont waste a trip there to get rejected because I have everything but the receipt.

Ok guys, I reformatted by C: and reinstalled the gpu driver.
Now it is working fine. Turns out, the new drivers from Nvidia will cause severe crashes. Though I dont know why the driver only crashes the pc during stress. Blue screen, no display, everything. So complicated. Anyway, now everything is running fine after i install from the Disc.
