Is applecare essential?

cant comment much about other product line. for mac air, imho i reckon it would be cheaper to get it than to repair them.

for iphone, mainly used it for express replacement service.

Treat it as an insurance.

Mac repair can be expensive. I was quoted about $1k to replace my MBP screen last year.

If i were to get a mac... I would definitely get the applcare.
Been in and out once every year to Apple Service Centre by A.Lab or QCD until my Applecare ended. Now need to be extra careful.

Changing battery or HDD almost dying or GPU failure thus need to change the motherboard.
Because I'm using the 15'' for my video editing and rendering which requires intensive usage on certain applications thus prone to go for the service every once in a while.

For iPhone,
I did not get the Applcare+
Don't think the need for it. Previous phone did well for 4 - 5 years.
In my case.

Agreed regarding the applecare for macbook.
My Macbook retina pro 13's screen broke (completely blank), think something fell on it and it didn't have applecare. Quoted 1k+ by Apple service centre. Chose to go external to repair it for about $500. However, after 7 months, the screen is now broken again, strips of the screen are not displaying correctly. Went back to the same repair shop and they said that warranty only covered 30 days, so I had to pay the same amount again to fix the screen.

As a side note, they did say that the retina screens are quite fragile and can easily get damaged.

Maybe my luck, I've got 2 macbooks at home, 1 with apple care which didn't have any issues even after being dropped a couple of times and the other that broke twice without applecare.

For iPhone, I guess it depends on how careful you are with your phone.

I got it for my mba and Apple Watch but not for iPhone.

MBA - long term use, probability of it breaking down higher.

AW - relatively affordable and since its 1st gen, bought just in case.

IPhone - since I tend to change phone every year, no point.

Definitely get apple care for expensive products like macbook pro.

I've been to alab countless times and the repairs I did almost costs the entire retail price or more of the late 2013 MBPr 13" that I own. Replaced my screen 4 times and my speakers 2 times.

if you can afford to blow a few thousand bucks on a macbook, what is the additional 200bucks for extended warranty? it's like having the money to buy a car but reluctant to buy coupon for parking and risk getting fined.

I have two macbook pro 15" retina, a 11" macbook air, several iphone 7+ and several iphone 5s. I never bought applecare. If spoilt, I order parts myself and repair them.

Recently my 6 year old macbook air could not charge anymore. So I opened up and replaced the charging circuit board. Total damage was $80. Working perfectly again.

A.labs quoted me $400+.

Then after that, my macbook air charger failed, so i opened it up and extracted a valuable electrical component inside and kept it. The rest throw away. Its now running off a charger that outputs the same voltage and with sufficient amperage to meet the maximum wattage it will use.

I only buy for Mac and not for iPhone or iPad. I sent my previous macbook pro for battery replacement, with apple care, it was fully covered.

There are many spare parts available online for macbook and iphone repairs. I dont source from china. All american sellers who specialise in these original parts, presumably cannibalized from old machines. They are not new but it works, and have warranty - not from apple but a simple refund.

Apple does not sell spare parts online. I check the component part number and order from these non-apple guys. No big cannon here. Have you tried repairing apple products before?

Even macbook batteries are available. Many things can be fixed yourself if you got the tools and skills.

That is correct in general. But when it came to the exact part I needed, I could not find from china seller.

Some things such as de-commissioned military grade laptops are very cheap when shipped direct from america. China sellers get them from america too, or thats what they told me. So their price is actually higher.

And for many apple spare parts, you want genuine articles. It is hard to get that assurance from chinese sellers.

Also I am not sure if china got a recycling program for laptops that entails stripping out various components and finding buyers for them on the used market. This trade is much more alive and trustworthy in america.

So it all depends. US or china, I find someone I am comfortable with before payment. I do not always go for the lowest price.

These days parts all soldered except ssd so best to have applecare
