My late granny from Fujian 永春. Lived till 101 and passed away last year. She knew how to spoke traditional hokkien which many local old folks may not knew. 兴化 is using another type of hokkien . Both hokkien but sounded different. Such hokkien maybe mistaken as those hokkien we speak in Singapore

I can speak Hokkien, but can't understand > 10% of Henghua dialect

u mean Guangzhou ?

Guangzhou is the provincial capital of Guangdong province 广东省

there r diff region 市 in 广东省 and speak diff dialects.

Teochew is spoken in 潮州 (new name Chaozhou) & Swatow 汕头 (new name Shantou), Hakka is spoken in 惠州 梅州 深圳 (partial of Hakka cuz Hakka spread to many other provinces too)

even Teochew share similarity w Hokkien dialect, but they belong to diff provinces.

there r some minority dialects fr Guangdong province were heard in Sg in 80s, now probably not many ppl speaks. one example is 海陆丰 located in 汕尾市. there are Teochew version of 福佬话 and Hakka version of 海陆腔 which Taiwanese Hakka speak.

another dialect that i can't heard anymore in Sg is 广西话 Guangxi

Nah there are still many ppl in sg that speak Cantonese be it Sinkie, Malaysian or Hongkie

Just that majority of them speak with their parent, relative and sibling at home

SG is unlike Malaysia and Hongkong where Cantonese are widely use or allow on our local tv programs or in movie

Hokkien is a province 省, 兴化 is only a region 市 in 福建省

兴化 = 莆田 = 福清 = 福州 Hokjiak, they r the Jews of the Hokkien province

they stay around 莆田市 福州市

and they control the economy + mafia of the region,

in Sg, they r prominent bankers, ppty developers like Ng Teng Fong & family,

in Msia, they run biz in monopoly in certain sectors & area, like Yong Peng of Johor, Perak & Sarawak.

In Indon & Thailand, they also quite prominent.

they r also very hardworking ppl that can work 7 days wo rest.

in traditional biz, they r into bicycles repair, trading & manufacturing.

they r also notorious 福清帮

兴化 = 莆田

兴化 or 莆田 =/= 福清

兴化 or 莆田 =/= 福州

福清 =/= 福州

So is Hokkien la, since Fujian is Hokkien
Hokkein = 闽南, sich as xiamen, zhangzhou etc. Found at the southern side of fujian province
Hokchiu(fuzhou)- 福州, dialect of north eastern fujian, and the provonce capital
Hokchia 福清、 just south of fuzhou
Henghua 兴化/莆田, found in central eastern of Fijian

All different dialect
E. g in fuzhou dialect, dog is pronunced as "keng yang"

But over here in SG, majority are hokkein while the other 3 dialects were only like 1-2% of the Chinese population here

So not surprised if your friend uses hokkein.
