Is math degree in NUS useful?

Hi there, i hope someone would enlighten me on this.

Is math degree solely used for teaching? Is it like an alternative NIE route?

I heard from peers that the course is very dry and you are basically learning theoritical stuff.

Is applied maths , statistical maths and quantitive finance related to accountancy and business stuff? (Like working for bank and auditing?)

1) Are you sure that with a NUS Math Degree, you can go NIE or even become a GEO1 (MOE Teacher with graduate grade)?

2) Apart from teaching Math, is there any job you can think of a Math Graduate can do?

3) Does the modules even teach you what is Accounting & related things like Balance sheet to be 'competent' to do an Accounting related job?

4) If you are an employer, will you chose a Math or Business graduate for business related job?

1) TS quote accountancy stuff for jobs like working for bank and auditing. Knowledge & skill for Balance sheet is a MUST but not fantastic math calculation methods.

2) You can count until cow come home but business related jobs take more then math calculation methods. One of the reason why I cross trained from Engineering to Business is because Engineering (Cert & Dip Level) does not cover Law. It help me when I am dealing with contracts when I am doing HR & Maintenance jobs. Does Math teach you things like what is a common law?

Hi TS, I've known someone who is from NUS math working in a bank.

Math major can go into actuaries, finance esp those quantitative positions. TS Don't go counting cows waste time better use on researching online.

Note to go into actuaries u need to take exams to get cert

i always tell ppl who love maths/score well in maths/think maths is easy to pursue accounting instead. It's also full of maths and more practical

Yes, I do know that many engineering graduates are employed by the financial institutions which mean a lot of positions only require a degree but not their trade.

An Engineering degree graduate apart from doing an 'any degree' job, he can also work for the position of Engineer.

Since you have different view from me, can you share with me apart from doing an 'any degree' job, what can a Math graduate do?

Sorry kyoji. IMO Engineers can work in financial institutions not because they just have a degree. Its because out of all the graduates that can be hired, engineers have mathematical backgrounds which are useful to financial institutions. NTU lists the several occupations that their mathematical science graduates work as :
*actuary, computer analyst, computer programmer, cryptologist, data analyst, financial analyst, financial planner, investment analyst, market research analyst, numerical analyst, operations research analyst, quality control analyst, research scientist, resource management analyst, software analyst, statistician, systems analyst, teacher, transportation analyst.

If any of you doubt that math grads can find jobs. Just Google the ntu or NUS graduate employment survey and see for yourself.
