Is my GPU faulty?

HI all,

I have a gtx 780 zotac amp edition. Upgraded my pc by changing the cpu,ram,mobo and case. Only storage, PSu and Gpu were reused.

Long story short i'm having some issues playing games. The worst is witcher 3. The game constantly stutters and has massive fps drops. the frames also seem to 'jump'. After much effort to fix that problem, I installed the latest Nvidia driver and now I cant even play the game. The whole game freezes and crash to desktop. No error nothing.

Experienced similar problems with GTA5 and batman arkham origins. 3 out 4 games i tried crashed. I had this same problem prior to upgrading. BUt then i would just underclock it and it will be fine. NOw that doesn't work also.

SO long story short, Could it be that my gpu faulty? or could there be any other causes? Thanks in advance.

Need to know you're running amd or Intel cpu.

i used to have to underclock my gpu as well otherwise games will crash. but it will show a 'display driver stopped responding' error when the game crashes. changing gpu is what fixed it for me..

quite hard to diagnose if you're not getting any information on why your games are crashing, most likely faulty gpu too

Can you try taking out your gpu, plug your display cable to motherboard output and run games with your igpu? Yes you will need to crank down all your graphical settings, try testing to rule out if it is a motherboard issue.

If it runs okay, you will need to rma that gpu instead.

hi guys,

Before my upgrade, I still had the same issues. So i don't think it could be a motherboard or other hardware as the gpu(excluding storage and psu of course) is the only one i reused. Furthermore, Yeah i'm not getting any errors at all so that's that.

The reason I have not just Went and Rmaed it yet is because, when i try lesser demanding games, like Rome 2 total war or l4d 2, they run fine. So i'm not 100% sure it's the gpu. I feel like I am in a rather weird scenario. As they are no other problems with my system at all.

If it's a DXGI_Error_deviceremoved or something, it's something to do with your clocks. Usually I try to increase the TDR in the registry to 8 seconds before I downclock my GPU but usually downclocking works best.

Even if you RMA,you may still have the issue and some games are extremely sensitive to overclocks even factory overclocked ones.

You can install and run Unigine Valley at stock settings for 24 hours. If it is not stable, then you have a bad GPU.

Do monitor the GPU temperatures (ignore the temps displayed by Ungine Valley as these are not reliable) using AfterBurner or some other software. If temps are too high, it could point to bad thermal interface between cooler and GPU chip.

hi, I dont think it could be a PSU issue. Its also been Rmaed quite recently. Plus My computer otherwise runs completely fine.

Additionally, Witcher 3 crashes or stutters regardless of graphics quality. I run witcher 3 on low-medium to reduce the stuttering. Other games just crash. Again, lesser demanding games don't seem to have this issue. When i check the temps on the gpu, the highest I've seen it go is like 60 degrees ++, which I assume is good.

And again, No errors at all.


Additionally: Ran Unigine superposition at 1080p medium. I also Ran unigine valley at extreme HD for bit over an hour. no problems. Temps stayed in the 60s.
