Heat not much of an issue unless you running really high temps (>45c). Bad luck of the draw will get your hdd first.

If your HDD is mounted in a dead spot with little or no airflow, then a HDD cooler helps to cool it down during intensive read/write activity. ITX/mATX casing tends to have poor airflow in HDD mount area. Donkey years ago, was using a Chen Ming clone mATX casing, HDD temperature is close to 50°C even a HDD cooler is installed. Only after 9 holes are drilled near there, temperature dropped to < 45°C.

Most casing nowadays have fan pulling air from the front through the hard drive. So I think they should run cool enough.

I remember having one of the Zalman heatpipe hard drive cooler back then. But I don't think it was very useful other than making it look more attractive. The heat still needs to be removed by the case fan or it will not be effective at all.

Does it help to prevent problems such as bad sectors due to overheating ?
Or it's just a waste to buy ? I'm thinking of buying if it makes a difference.

Run this : HWMonitor
If your temperature is 50 Deg C or more, it is better to find some cooling solution then regret later.

Most mATX case are design to have a 120mm in front to cool the hdd.
The only problem is that area is alway block by the gfx card. So source your casing carefully. If need to change to a better one, just do it. Like nike slogan says.

Fyi, I am using this :

The temperature is about 41 Deg C constantly.

this type of HDD fan looks like going to give the HDD area a lot of wind~

If the temps in your casing is high, no number of HDD fans will help to cool it down substantially.

You are better off improving the airflow of your case and lowering the internal temperature as a whole.
