A few days ago my 2.5 year old seagate had like 6 pending sectors and 0 reallocated sectors... nothing to worry about. Even did a Seatools testing for fun, and test completed without any problems/error codes.

Then I bought a toshiba to transfer the info over... turns out there is more!
Even my 5 year old 2TB samsung dont have until such high values..

I guess smart values is useless. It doesn't reflect the actual state of drive until you start copying out the files.

I think those who bought seagate in 2012 should take note!

Edit: turns out to be bent head causing the problem

Good thing you bought a replacement drive before the Seagate goes belly up.

Yeah, SMART is not that SMART... Just treat it as a warning sign if you are lucky enough to get scan errors.

Our results confirm the findings of previous smaller
population studies that suggest that some of the SMART
parameters are well-correlated with higher failure probabilities.
We find, for example, that after their first scan
error, drives are 39 times more likely to fail within 60
days than drives with no such errors. First errors in reallocations,
offline reallocations, and probational counts
are also strongly correlated to higher failure probabilities.
Despite those strong correlations, we find that
failure prediction models based on SMART parameters
alone are likely to be severely limited in their prediction
accuracy, given that a large fraction of our failed drives
have shown no SMART error signals whatsoever.
This
result suggests that SMART models are more useful in
predicting trends for large aggregate populations than for
individual components. It also suggests that powerful
predictive models need to make use of signals beyond
those provided by SMART.

Need to do a thorough scan of the whole HDD to find out all the bad sectors, the SMART status just gives a warning.

I used seatools long and short test 2 months ago no problem. Only when I want to start copying things out then can see the problems

Have to do the long test for accurate result. Short test doesn't check the whole disk thoroughly.

HDD is cheap nowadays. Just buy and be prepared to get a new one. Backup and sync important files to cloud will do.

Agreed. But the problem is having the discipline to do it regularly. Sometimes within 2 months, the results can be quite different
