Ello everyone,

I'm traveling with gf, both our first time in Japan and feeling very noob about this, hope we could get help for tips, ideas and places to go/eat...

Travel date from 28 Mar to 4 Apr, so far flight and hotel booked (and at cut throat price).

Location of stay:

Will be staying at Shinjuku Kabuchico area. Nearest train station on map is Higashi-Shinjuku station. Recognized this is a red light district, so it's like geylang - unsafe?

Arriving in Hanade Airport and departing from Narita Airport.

What's the best way to go about to and fro our hotel to two different airport?

Reckon that we'll be using Higashi station alot is there any suitable train pass to buy?

Any good and affordable eatries near this area?

Itinerary:

Looking at 50% shopping and 50% sightseeing kind of activities.

Currently planning to go Meji Shrine, the big garden near shinjuku for cherry blossom and tsukuji fish market. Shopping will be shinjuku area.

Any special consideration to look out for or to avoid. Ie I heard weekend visit shrine better as got chance to see traditional wedding?

That's all we have in mind now appreciate any help we can get :)

TIA !

red light districts are safe enough. If those pimps call you out, you just wave them off or a gentle shake of your head will do.

you are going abt the same period as me. im from 1st to 9 april.
just wondering how much u paid for the hotel?
me and my gang started planning since last july. flight abt 600sgd and hotels abt 75sgd per night. so curious how much u spent so far..

ok i have did abit of my research. are u going out of tokyo? ie mt fuji?

for my case im going mt fuji for 2d1n, and disneyland area hotel for 3d2n. so basically i have less time at tokyo.

i have not plan a proper layout yet. but there are places that u might consider going for cherry blossom:
meguro river park
koishikawa korakuen garden
yoyogi park

got shopping depends what u like. my grp likes cartoon (pokemon and 1 piece)
so we are going places like sunshine city and tokyo station.

we are going to gotemba outlet as i heard the things there are cheap. that's why we are ging mt fuji for 2d1n. we are also renting car to save time and able to see some scenary along the way.

AnF, Adidas, Nike, Gap, Le Creuset(If you are into those pots), prices there pretty good..

But if looking for Nike Airmax then u might find nicer models outside like at Atmos..

I spend almost 1 day there the other time..Will be looking to go again for my next trip..

u can do a search on the train station to see how to get ard:
http://www.hyperdia.com/en/

various ways to travel from the airport. I think the easiest is probably from Haneda to Hamamatsucho by monorail, and then take Oedo subway from Daimon station to Higashi-Shinjuku
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2430.html

for narita airport, u can take subway to shibuya station and then narita express train to the airport.

as for itinerary, for a start u can visit japan-guide website and see wat are the popular attractions:
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2164.html#section_whatToSee
u can also take a look at some of our trip reports to get some ideas:
http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/japan-271/compilation-trip-reports-3158981.html

other than Shinjuku gyoen, u can also visit Ueno park for cherry blossom.

I'm embarrassed we book the airflight and hotel just 2 days back and everything was 90% sold out. Price was sky rocket also because of the peak season. ANA flight round trip is 1.2k per pax and hotel one night is 230 (room is only 10sqm, wtf is this a norm?)

Should have booked earlier, this is a travel peak period.

You can't do anything about the flight, but I think you can still do something about the hotel if there is a free cancellation policy for the hotel you booked.

Maybe pick another area to stay at?

Any alternatives to recommend? Hotel maybe can change with a nominal fee we choose this hotel because of the location at shinjuku. Wondering maybe we can go to a more "rural" area that is near train station which is cheaper and bigger rm.

Can try takadanobaba sunroute, very convenient, is a min walk to Jr. Station and metro station, is between ikebukuro and Shinjuku, round the corner is the famous Shaba Shaba place and also that store with the icon of a duck (forget what it call) and few blocks away is a supermarket.

From Haneda can take the limo bus to ikebukuro and take Jr train to there. The only con is very noisy at night need to request high floor and quite stuffy, need to open windows and quite small (well hotel in Japan is always small except international hotels).

Last stay there during 2015 Sakura for 2 weeks. Sakura season is very cold and windy and sometime will rain

If you are more adventurous, you can try a ryokan with that kind of budget that you have. You can try Japanican for Ryokan search, for now I see there are only two choices but they are a bit far-off from Shinjuku, and the staff may not speak English (all the reviews are in Japanese).

For this apartment, it's pretty steep however but at least the room is at least 19 sq meter: http://www.booking.com/hotel/jp/oakwood-apartments-ariake.en-gb.html

Can't find anything else for those dates you mentioned, even when I tried to split bookings or so.

This recommendation, I checked, it is only available from 28 mar to 3 apr for now, the person will need to find another accommodation for 3-4 apr.

Another option maybe will be love hotels on booking.com....but I don't know if you are open for that kind of option. I saw that some of the rooms are listed as 40sqm.

I'll be in Tokyo from April 6 to 12.
Had my tix and hotels booked last year so prices were alright.

If your hotel has free cancellation, you can try Airbnb. For that price, there are some very decent options in good central locations (Shinjuku,Shibuya,Roppongi etc) for a whole apartment. Most hosts do throw in a free mobile wifi device which you can carry it around with you. Thus no need to get your own SIM or mobile wifi.

Kabuki-Cho is quite an interesting district at night to explore, and I would say it is generally safe to traverse freely.

Yokohama is an interesting area to visit for a day trip as well, there's a Nissin cup noodle factory.
Plus they have a factory outlet there as well, which I feel has a decent array of shops. I find Gotemba outlet to be really crowded with tourists but you get a view of Mount Fuji from there.

For Tsukiji market, are you heading there for the tuna auction? Heard queues for the auction are full by 4.30am.

Here is a list of gardens that offer good scenery for sakura blossoms
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3050.html

Note that Shinjuku Goen park closes early and closed on some days too.

I like the area around Shinjuku Kabuki, it feels very "Tokyo" with the big neon lights and plenty of people, lots of small restaurants too.

Kabukicho is quite safe even at night. I stayed there recently on my solo trip.

Just politely wave the touts away or politely say no when they approach you. They can be persistent but not aggressive.
