The question is too general.

Some points for your considerations before zooming into specifics:

1. What do you like? Shopping? Old charms? Nature? What kind of activities? Food? What kind of experience you want to have for this trip?

2. Time you have? How long?

3. Budget? How deep is your pocket? How much you would like to spend?

4. Going with? Different people and different purposes..... How old are you? How old are the people going with you? WIth family and kids? Alone?

Anyway most people would say that first timers should either go to Tokyo area or Kansai area depending on what aspect of Japan appeals more to them.
