New J3 user here, just got mine today after reading so much abt it.

Please don't flame me, I just stating my own personal opinions on this player.

I'm on the latest firmware. 1st thing I do is to update the firmware.

1. User interface not very good
2. Sound quality is only so so out of the box
3. Need to EQ to sound good

I'm play FLAC and WAV files only. Tested out the player with songs I usually played thru my home system and headphone system.

Equipments
1. Accuphase, Luxman and Pioneer Amp (All vintage, 1973 - 1984)
2. Klipsch KG5.5 Modded (upgraded horn and crossover)
3. Marantz CD6003
4. Bijou Headphone Amp (loaded with Mundoft caps)
5. HD280Pro, HD600, HD650, PX100, AKG701.
6. Onkyo SE200LTD

Maybe I am biased as I am not used to new PMP. My older player are Creative Nuvo and Zen.

But for the price I paid, I expect it to be much much much better than my Creative player.

I emphasis - A lot of EQ need to be done to get it to sound good. Unless you are "upgrading" from one of that very popular brand of player, I don't think a normal user will like this player very much. Too much hassle, too much work.

Latest price in Singapore is $370. $70 more than you order from Amazon with express shipping. $370 from SLS and Funan (need to bargain)

Disappointed, should have gone for the Hifiman which I tried and love.

Battery life and price and the headphone I wanted to use with it is too big for easy portability.

But from your review , its kinda true .

Imo , J3 sounds nice when you play with the EQ . J3 is actually more for the EQ type of person . Sadly , not purist kind . :(

Yes, the EQ is what (I think) set the Cowon J3 apart from other players.

With patience, you can tweet the J3 to sound like almost anything you want with almost any decent headphone. It is like a very very good emulator.

What earphone do you recommend for use with the J3. I'm thinking of heading down to Stereo with the J3 to audition some prospects. I am thinking of Grado (never own one!!).

I tried the J3 with a headphone amp (Bijou). Sound a lot better without EQing at low volume and the sound wayy bigger.

I *might* want to build a simple headphone amp for it or invest in the O2.

I wouldn't recommend but just go along with what your ears prefer .

I don't own the Grados too . I'm into bass and soundstage . Mine's IE8 .

It is so difficult to strike a good EQ without lossing detail.

i concur. The loss of detail is abit alarming when using the EQ. Had to resort to using an amp for the colouring i wanted. :look::look: If not for the L/R balance, i wont be looking at the J3. You might want to try the 2nd "viva" which works best to me

Viva not working for me. Still not the big sound I am looking out for.

Guitar player?

Yes..I am reamping as well to get the coloring I want but it is very ley chek.

I'm not giving up yet...worst case, I will sell my JMP-1 and use the money for a Hifiman.

J3 is a good player by itself, perhaps u should look at changing ur iem to ur preferred signature?

Yeah moi know ish double amping but it does sounds better to my ears. 2nd Viva sounds more open. Bass quantity is okay to me using ety hf5---only thing that sounds more favourable imo is the er4s. Not to sure if i am a treblehead....but i play the bass guitar. lol the irony
