Will be travelling to Sapporo next month. I would like to check what happen if my JAL flight to new chitose was diverted back to haneda due to snow storm. Will I have to retrieve my luggage and rebook the flight?

JAL is a full service carrier, so if it happens that they have to divert your plane's landing to Haneda, they will do their best to get you onto the next flight leaving to Chitose, and if there's no flight until the next day or so, they'll most likely then give you your luggage and boarding pass for the next day, and you'll have to spend a night at the airport.

Have full trust in JAL. I missed their domestic flight from Chitose. With no questions ask, i was hurried in to the next available flight.

I think don't worry so much about diversions and cancellations. Just go enjoy your trip and buy travel insurance. If it happens just spend wisely for accomodation/transport and claim back later.

The SQ chitose sleepover happen because the flight was chartered and everyone was booked by tour groups. You can't separate the tour group without people complaining of being treated unfairly. (eg Why this family get toyoko inn the other get hyatt)
