First timer? If you like the modern, pop culture side of Japan then go Tokyo. If you prefer temples, zen, sightseeing then go Kansai (Osaka Kyoto etc).

If want cool then go during spring or autumn.

Check http://www.japan-guide.com/ for ideas.

ur questions really too vague. suggest u read up abit on japan-guide website or take a look at the itineraries in the trip report thread to have some idea first.

for first timer, maybe stick to Tokyo. easier to get around coz there are many English signs everywhere, and people are more likely to be able to speak a bit of english.

Better avoid travel from June to Sept. Japan summer can be as hot like sg.

I agreed 1St timer shd stick to either Tokyo or osaka/kyoto. Don't do both.

i just wanna clarify something about this "summer" season that many travelers are unaware of. while technically summer commences in jun but it is practically raining everyday in jun to mid-jul. in fact, after speaking to a few jap, they don't treat that period of time as "summer"!? :s11:

yes, it's tsuyu which i think it's also called 梅雨 in Chinese. more info from japan-guide --> http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2277.html

it's important to inform impending visitors of the actual weather condition. last year, we were unfortunate enough to take for granted that summer means (mostly) sunny when it is not. anyway, still a wonderful experience walking around streets of tokyo in a pair of drenched canvas slip-on ... everyday ... for 9days! :s13:

Warm weather is super turn off for me. Ideally I want hovering around 10 and below 20 to be comfortable especially carry so much camera gears with tripod.

Some more I don't like taking snowscape. Compared to spring or Autumn in Kyoto.

basically when it comes to weather, different people has different comfort level. for me, i love hot, hot and very hot weather. even when my male colleagues are complaining of scorching hot sun when we go out for lunch, i find the weather comfortably warm at most. but i can't tahan cold. i came to work with a shirt and an uniqlo inner wear, and another office jacket when i start working. but my 2 colleagues sit beside me can make do with just 1 layer of shirt or tee!!!

i dream to go hokkaido but i guess i'll brain-freeze the mmt i arrive. :D

sorry i digress. since there is raining season in summer, is there a (hot scorching) sunny season during winter? this info is more practical then telling visitors that it's spring, summer or whatever seasons but the actual weather does not befit the season.

If you like to ski, go in winter.

First timer? Tokyo is a no brainer. I would also suggest Fukuoka as day trip to Nagasaki, Beppu, Yufuin are all feasible. Not to mention that it is less travelled than Tokyo and Osaka and you can have a feel of a mellower Japanese city.

In Japan, normally winter is the coldest period. Autumn and spring quite similar temperature, warmer than winter. Summer is very warm like Singapore. Typhoon season also in summer where you get massive rain and wind.

Autumn and spring is good because weather quite dry with not much rain. Scenery also better for shooting. Sakura and autumn leaves peak period for tourist and Japanese. Summer still okay the trees are green. Winter mostly bare branches so photo not as nice.

Went 5 times to japan so far. 2 x spring and 1 each for 3 different seasons. Best is confirm spring cos of cool weather and long daylight hours to see more of japan. Autumn red leave period although also cooling but get dark from 3.30pm so much lesser daylight to see more

that's very informative.

a stupid question. for a person who has low tolerance of coldness but wanna experience hokkaido winter snow. is there a period of winter which is the least cold?

If you want to experience snow then the area temperature must be around 4 degrees or lower.

No choice you'll have to bundle up. On top of jackets, thermal inner wear and pants.
Get something to cover your head including your ears. Get a scarf or neck warmer to cover your neck and nose/mouth. Waterproof and windproof gloves and shoes.

Depends what you mean by "experience snow." When winter transitions to spring, the weather will be like 5 deg, 10 deg, but since there is few hundred cm of snow on the ground, it takes time to melt. So you go during that time you will still be able to walk around on the snow and build snowman and throw snowballs without being "too cold."

BUT! Because the snow is melting, it is the wet, mushy, hard kind of snow.

If you want "proper" snow i.e. powdery, fluffy, soft, snow on your gloves and hair but won't melt, then bopian need to go during actual winter when it's 0 or colder.
