any recommendations for japan car rentals?

planning to drive in wakayama (shirahama & kushimoto area)

I rented thru Tocoo previously when I traveled to those places u mentioned. I drove down straight from kansai airport

I usually book thru Jalan.net or Rakuten Japanese sites as these seem to offer better prices most times ... from these sites, I have rented from Times Car (Mazda), Honda, NicoNico, e-Rental Car/Samurai Car ... all are good

I use ToCoo as a comparison site.

For Honshu, I was surprised to see that some car rental companies do not rent to foreigners ... in Hokkaido, I have never experienced this.

rental rates depend on type of car, promotions etc ... some of my past rentals :

2017: Suzuki Every 660cc, 14 days, JPY 33,480 (basic rental no insurance)
2017: Honda Freed, 5.5 days, JPY 32,076 for 7 days (basic rental no insure)
2017: Honda Fit, 5.5 days, JPY 14,760 (basic rental no insure)
2016: Honda Freed, 7.5 days, JPY 28,530 base rental + JPY 16,092 (NOC + CDW insurance) less JPY 7000 coupon = $37,622

For Compact Car, the typical excess are :
1) Car Damage Excess (CDW) is JPY 50k
2) Property Damage Excess (CDW) is JPY 50k
3) Non Operating Charge is JPY 20k (car is drivable) to JPY 50k (car cannot be driven back).

These excess amounts are very much fixed for most car rental companies. Damage excess may vary with car type.

Cost of buying CDW & NOC insurance varies, but are reasonable IMO .. from above example ... about JPY 2200 per day for Honda Freed.
