Hey all! I'm going to Japan in January and the forecasts show that the temperature is going to be around 5 degrees. Just wondering if a t shirt, hoodie and a denim jacket would be enough to keep me warm?

Unlikely, unless you are going to Okinawa. Just got back from Japan earlier this week, and inner wear + long-sleeved shirt + thick jacket was barely sufficient to keep me warm as it got later in the day.

It depends on the area which you are heading to, 5 degrees can be colder than that if you factor in windchill...

Urban area - your describe clothing is good enough.
Rural snowy + windy - may just need a thicker jacket with a pair of gloves

The weather this winter seems to be very cold in general. A down jacket, a long sleeve heat tech fleece shirt and thermal wear meant for minus degrees still felt like they were insufficient in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. I used to wear t-shirt and down jacket for the same period.

last night i was out in town (kyoto city center) with my mid weight thermals top and bottom, normal long sleeve shirt and jeans, and my MA-1 flight jacket. I was also wearing a beanie, heattech socks and sneakers. it was about 5 deg.
