the speed is quite ok for me, like not much issue when using internet

my only reason for preferring wifi router is that sometimes japan tourist sim card got compatibility problem with the phones

Yeah I agree, Wifi is the way to go. Although sometimes when you go to the countryside it loses its reception...which is abit shitty.

You might wanna check out this Wifi service in Japan called NINJA WIFI. Looks pretty good. Just Google it (I still can't post links, lol)

I've used bmobile on all my trips to Japan. This is more convenient than having to charge and bring around the wifi device around. Bmobile tourist sim used to have 2 kinds - 1GB or unlimited (with slower speed), now they streamlined to only having the unlimited one. Lowered the prices too.

Used both before and the speed is good enough for Google Maps, WhatsApp Calls, IG or FB photo uploads, etc. Had zero problems with it.

The only downside is that it will expire after 2 weeks so for those who would like to stay longer in Japan, you will have to top-up (charge to it again).
