Hi
Anyone know if Japanican will be processed by SG credit cards as an overseas transaction? I.e. I will be hit with the credit card fees for foreign txn?

It's simple... if checking out it says SGD.. there won't be forex charges... other wise, you may be hit with charges and not so good exchange rates.

My transaction with Japanican in Jan 2016 was charged in JPY and was considered as a foreign transaction that was processed outside of SG.

Not necessarily, I think it can state SGD but still process as an overseas txn. If I'm not wrong, this was an issue for Uber transactions in the early days

If its hotel in Japan, I will select "payment at hotel" and pay the hotel in cash upon arrival.

Increasingly alot of hotels listed on japanican don't have the payment at hotel option compared to a 2 - 3 years ago :( it used to be a decent site to book from

Try Rakuten Travel or Jalan(dot)net. Or book direct. There's payment upon arrival at times. If you understood Japanese, you get to choose PUA or advance payment for your selected accommodation plan.

Jalan.net is truly the cheapest especially for local hostel. I've booked hostel for $150 when the same hostel costs $220 in Booking...!

But the challenge is in creating the account esp you have to put a name in Japanese character Hahaha, but thereafter its quite simple !
