Yes it does help alot...and it expedites your kanji learning process even for new kanjis...
Only thing is that sometime the kanji have very different meaning...
Cert only says so much.Furthermore the jlpt exams are all MCQs,i wont say its the best gauge of one's ability.You know where you stand where you want to reach.i feel that reaching the proficiency level you desire is more important.
Personally...i self studied for JLPT3...i ended up being weak in conversation.Partly because i have no one to practice with.So now,i taking up classes to advance my jap proficiency...

I was caught by my mum once when Im 'training' and she stared at me like she saw an alien. 
I aim to be able to read and speak. Writing of course is a must but thats not my prority.

Shadowing,self-conversation are methods la...but i dont find them very effective...

i think its much better than learning the structured way since those are more for compos n report writing haha.. wun be able to use those we learn for our daily lives.. movies n animes are much better sources!~
