Hello,
I am going to book Jetstar from
Singapore->Melbourne->Auckland-(JQ8, JQ213) a single booking.

The transit time in Melbourne is only 2hrs 15mins which I believe leaves no margin to accommodate any delay.

In case of flight delay on the first leg of the flight causing me to miss the second and flight, would jetstar arrange to put me into next available flight for free?

Thank you!

If I'm not wrong, if your ticket is a through-fare they are obligated to wait for you at Melbourne since anyone going to AKL like you will be similarly delayed.

In any case, transiting at Melbourne should be quite fast (probably 20min tops to get to your next gate).

However if they are separate tickets (which doesn't seem to be the case for you), you're on your own.

Depending on how delayed the flight is, if slight delay, they might wait, not for extended periods. Also, they are obligated to get you to your destination, but only on their own metal, so check if there are frequent flights the rest of the day, otherwise, you do risk paying for hotel there yourself.

Hmm.. did you check in language? From my limited understanding of Sydney, even if you were to transit, you will still have to take your baggage and check in again. You might want to check on this because it might Cause some delays. Alternatively, if they check you through, you should be fine.

Not true. It's highly highly unlikely that the carrier will purposely delay the second flight. At most they will try to arrange to meet you at the gate and run with you to the connecting flight, but if you don't make it then you don't make it, the connecting flight will leave without you.

What they ARE obligated to do is to book you on any next available flight(s) and to pay for your hotel overnights etc if applicable.

Depends on airline policy and how they arrange their flights. For example, I was on UA, transiting in NRT. It was the H5N1 period, where the Japanese will board the flight in hazmat suit and check everyone's temperature. My flight into NRT was delayed, plus the additional screening, many people were very late for their connecting flights. UA operations at NRT actually have many flights arriving around the same time, then flights depearting 2 to 3 hours later, so most people can connect to most other flights. So they actually waited for the SLIGHTLY delayed flights. I was also going to SIN - NRT - SFO last year. Specially chose the 2nd NRT - SFO flight as the 1st one was much fuller. In the end, the 1st NRT - SFO flight went mechanical and the 2nd flight was delayed to accomodate as many from the 1st flight as possible.

What they ARE obligated to do is to book you on any next available flight(s) and to pay for your hotel overnights etc if applicable.

FYI, full fare carriers are obligated to pay for your accommodation only under certain circumstances. Delay due to weather is not one of them (for general public). As for budget carriers, they are only obligated to bring you from point A to point B, with no obligation for accommodation or timing.

Yes i have check-in baggages. Im worrying now 2hrs 15mins is not enough time to clear immigration collect baggage, check-in again :(

hope its not true.

There may be a slight problem there because if the flight is full, your will probably have to take 20-30minutes just to Wait for your luggage. I'm assuming you may probably clear your customs in about 20-30minutes as well. If they give you two boarding pass at the same time then they might actually check you through. You should call them up and ask.

The timing is very tight honestly. Do what is necessary and pray for the best.

Connecting time should be more than enough. I have done much tighter times before. Luggage should be direct to end destination so you won't need to recheck in.

Since Jetstar is part of Qantas and the low cost division no less, I would not assume hotel accomodation to be a sure thing. While flying from Hobart to Singapore through Sydney I missed the connection in Sydney due to flight delay. QF refused to do anything about overnight hotel accomodation. Travel insurance is definitely needed in case of this sort of scenario, even more so when flying on crap airlines like QF and/or its affiliates.

Unfortunately, you're right. I'd always assumed carriers were obliged to handle your room n board if you needed to overnight but I was mistaken. Seems that nowadays all carriers are just obliged to book you on the next available flight and anything more is purely based on their discretion/goodwill :s22:
