For me, I don't have the speed for sprints probably due to my weight. My style is more of can maintain the pace for longer than most. I think my ideal is 17-21 km. Just thinking I only did one marathon in 2022 and dnf 2023 and 2024. Hoping I can finish with good timing in SCSM 2025.
I think your weight should be fine to do sprints. There are many big built sprinters but on the contrary, less big built marathoners.

Not a bad thing to main the 21km in Sg, as after all, there's only 1 marathon at the end of the year unless you want to venture overseas. 21km is a more popular distance in Sg. Also, given the longer work hours here, makes it harder to commit and train for marathon.

If some people dont like to run fast for whatever reasons, can try walking fast.
It could just be power walking (a more powerful form of brisk walking), or it could even be racewalking.

I used to be able to TT a 2.4 and hit 12:30 mins (5:12 pace) with racewalking.
Also did intervals and even "maximal sprints" but racewalking style, hit something like 4:05 pace.

Yes, it's a good start for starters, 2km is fine for starters and all your shoes are fine, then you slowly add the intensity and distance up, really slowly like 5% additional load each week. If you straight jump back into 5k now, sure sooner or later kena plantar fasciiatis or achilles tendonitis.
Not sure why did you leave daily 5k running last time.

You mentioned returning to running...... The idea is not to leave the hobby in the first place, so as to get consistency, via enjoyment of your new found "hobby". It could be running, could be cycling, could be swimming, could be strength/resistance training, could be hyrox. Or a combi of 2-4 of them. thist way you really enjoy it after a hard day's of work and hence all your sessions are a PULL factor rather than a PUSH one that you are doing simply coz you wanna lose weight.
I left because of job commitment. Especially long haul flights, and time zone different, its very tiring

Usually warm up, 5km run and then cool down, and rest takes about 1 hour. Sometimes after long haul flight really very sleep especially jet lags

Yah i understand bro. Quite a few of us here play hobby and want performance and timings, but the limiting factor is usually spare time that we can afford outside of family and job.

Dont mean to rant, but share story......

My BIL also travels a fair bit (at least once a month), sometimes 2-3 wks in a row and multiple countries 1 stretch...and as you know lots of prep and faffing around plus the jet lag ie extra time wasted on rest. Pay is good, now hitting 6k plus in mid 40s before allowance.
3 kids, and now divorced with wife already. Also no time to exercise or even eat properly most times coz cannot be picky esp when overseas. Few years ago during COVID time, started exercise when first detected small blockages in 2 arteries but did not mantain. Family problems, one kid high functioning autism and cannot really study (ITE also barely pass type) with lots of tuition. Stress also i guess.
Mid 40s, just suffered heart attack a few weeks ago. He has custody of the kid with mild high-functioning autism who barely passed N level and can made it to ITE, the wife has custody of the the other 2 kids who are pretty solid in studies (one is gifted). BIL last time paid for all the extra lessons in violin, piano, badminton, academic tuition etc. Really no joke for 3 kids, well over half of his salary gone in that alone, he has no hobbies no enjoyment at all. But srsly, alll these self choosing ba....married that time i already know the woman not simple or chin chai.

Life is "unfair" right? But again, remember, path in life and choices are ownself choose.

So it's a conundrum , wanna cheong $$$ and later pay back in terms of health suffering and also monetary as well coz of medical bills. And the age where comorbidities start showing is getting lower and lower, ie more years spent living with the comorbidities and more money. Or you want a more easy career path but less $$$ but possibly much less spneding on healthcare, take care of your health, assuming no issue with genetics and epigenetics of coz.

I do sprints but I mean my top speed is very slow compared to other runners. I think I just want to hit a sub 3 marathon if it's possible at all but prob not in SG. Otherwise will def focus on half haha

Might be a bit loserish to post this coz i am not a multi-millonare here in SG......but i appreciate the thinking and believe there is a good degree of truth in it, even though it is somewhat extreme thinking. Most important is to find inner peace with yourself and feel good about what you currently have, dont expect too much coz it is really never ending + one mountain is higher than another.

When you are older but still in good health (hopefully zero comorbidities) and really fit and can do things that even folks in their 30s-40s cannot do, you walk around also got wind and self confidence, and you exude an aura of youth. It is not the same as aesthetic surgery or what, it comes from within. Trust me on this. That is something that money cannot buy, you gotta earn it yourself with discipline and dedication.

ps. Actually i am an atheist. 🤣

Some stuff I read on BBC science magazine.

"Patchy research gives us an incomplete picture of the ways stretching and flexibility affect athletic performance.

Ingram points to distance runners as an example. Having flexible joints and muscles may help a runner’s stride and reduce tightness after a run. Conversely, being too flexible can reduce the stability of leg muscles and tendons, meaning less power return and, potentially, a greater risk of injury on the road."

Your weight vs speed ratio performance is extraordinary. Very rare in running world. Even those examples I saw of ex bui bui, but have a natural gift for running, and finally ran sub 3:30 marathon, almost all of them lose significant weight before achieving that. You are already there with your current weight.

Like your trainer said, your weight is the main is obstacle to sub 3.

I read that too somewhere about too flexible may increase injury, but didn't take mauch note of it since I don't stretch prior or after run. Only 5 minutes of dynamic warmup jog to get the body primed with more fuel and O2 before getting into target pace.

The other thing I read is muscle stiffness equate to better energy rebound equates to better running economy for speedster of 2.4km and below. So stretching those calves might reduce economy.
