Wow the 2007 edition C Boys winner Sumanthiran, I rmb him from my SJI days. Super fast runner. Sad that later on in life he went astray:

https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/23-year-old-jailed-16-years-beating-elderly-man-death
That's really unfortunate, but there are still some running legends that I remembered from my days.

There's a legendary coach called Rameshon, who set the previous national marathon record. He managed to coach Ashley Liew and Jared Hui, both of them ended up doing very well.

Jared Hui, used to be number 1 in his secondary school road runs, with zero cross country experience. Went to do a run trial at sec 4 with Rameshon and ran the 2.4km @ 9.20. Way below 8.20 criteria that Rameshon set. But Rameshon saw potential in him and coached him. Within 1 month, he did the 5km in 18.52. Afterwards, Rameshon didn't coach him anymore and asked him to study for Os. His O lvl was 15 points, supposed to go poly. But went to CJC by appealing to the running team, where he ran 2.4km @ 8.03 in the following year February. Later on, he went on to get 2nd in the National Cross Country Games in 2012.

Ashley Liew, used to be bui bui. First marathon 4 hr 29 min @ end of JC2 in 2004. Put on weight during NS. Started to diet/train under Rameshon in 2008, where he did his first speedwork. Made his breakthrough the following year where he got 2nd for the marathon in the local category (SCMS). He studied in SMU and ran for the team, but didn't have any standout performances. Went to the US and did chiropractor training. Ran his PB there for marathon @ 2.32 hr. Represented SG for marathon in 2013/2015 SEA Games.

There are also others that I recall: Mok Ying Ren (did well in cross country from school days and even uni, took a gap year after med school to train (including going to Boulder, Colorado) because medical housemanship is basically operating on 24-hr shifts. Didn't want to have any regrets before leaving the running scene and later married his waifu when he stepped down from the competitive scene.

Karthic (won National Cross Country Games in 2012/2013 in his first/second year in JC, came back to run for SUTD in 2018/2019 and won in the 1500m. SUTD was considered as an underdog uni, never won before until he came in. 1500m PB was 4.07 and 5000m PB was 16.13.

One guy that I met in 2015/2016 that is still currently in the running scene, is the Ngee Poly cross-country captain, Najib Mooiz. Managed to meet this guy on weekdays since my NS unit was stay out. Every day come home, will go Ngee Ann poly track to run before my dinner.

He debut in 2013 at 18 y.o., ran the 5km @ 18.59, 10km @ 39.34. In 2014, ran the 5km @ 18.11 and 18.13 as well as 10km @ 37.56. In 2015, 5km @ 17.53, 10km @ 37.20. Final run before he went NS was 37.04 in 2016. Continued training consistently under his old coach from poly. Last year in 2023, 10km PB was 34.39 and SCSM HM was 1.18 hr.

Consistency gets you really far.

Yeah I heard there is recommended training plan, don't really use it but it's definitely a good to have for those who want to use the features.

https://www.wings.org.sg/cross-country-CR.pdf

This is the history. Wings usually host their race in the same location before National Schools Cross Country Championships.

2002 and before was Macritchie Reservoir
2003 in Sentosa >> https://www.oocities.org/sg/njc_track/nxc03.html
2004 - 2007 Turf City >> https://www.redsports.sg/2007/04/22/48th-national-inter-school-cross-country-championships/ (2007 Turf City)
2008 onwards Bedok Reservoir >> https://www.redsports.sg/2009/03/26/soh-rui-yong-cross-country/

Interesting fact was that Soh Rui Yong got to race in Turf City during secondary school and won there and then later went on to win in Bedok Reservoir during JC
actually don't you think mac is a more suitable location for schools cross country now? lornie road is deserted 90% of the time so it's much less of a safety hazard than back in the day. and it's definitely more 'cross country' than bedok reservoir. the only thing is it will be difficult to have the prize presentation, unless they close off the top open deck of the car park and have it there

MacRitchie is probably better than Bedok. Bedok has it's issues where they aren't able to fully cordon the running route so runners will usually come in contact with passer-bys.

Even in the earlier days, there was some running on the grass but it was 100m only. Just to flag off the run on the grass. Afterwards, it was purely road/sand trail all the way. In the later years, they got rid of running on the grass and flag off at sand trail which is the main route. So, no more racing on the grass. :ROFLMAO:

Remember i was running 32-35 mins for few "forced" cross-country runs that i did in 1980s during secondary sch. Took bas to that iconic macritchie bus stop then, long journey, 6am+ need to take bas liao

cheesepie, ran until nearly kee chia. Remember super hot even tho in the morleng.
After finishing got ice milo / 100 plus to drink, and can see steam rising from body one.

Then took bas go back, and still had to continue lessons in school. Really hated it coz of the long bas journey and weather and tiredness.

The fastest runner I ever knew was the A-div 1500m champ in 2006 or 2007. Could also run 5km in slightly over 14 mins. He is now an army regular lol

Haha lucky my road runs in JC end liao, can go straight home and chill.

Ran at Jurong Lake and came in top 20 for both years, win a medal and top-20 finisher shirt. :ROFLMAO:
what are the effective methods to increase cadence ?
1. Reduce stride length and keep to shorter strides
2. Do interval work outs to improve your running form/pace
3. Do running drills (butt kick, a-skip, fast feet, high knees) before your runs > https://www.coached.fitness/blogs/cadence-running-drills/

Sounds like this guy: Darshananth s/o Jayaraman

Won both 1500/5000m in 2006 and broke the 5k national championships record at 15.40 min

Was definitely an underdog also coming from Innova JC facing up against all the other JCs

Oh, D'Cruz !!
D'Cruz is 15.11 for 4.8km, probably a high 15 minute 5km runner. Still incredible.

I ran 4.3km in Bedok Reservoir @ 16.45 for wings cross country, which is the race before Nationals.

You're definitely faster than me for cross country. I only managed to achieve your pace during army yr 2 when I stayed consistent and continued training.

Haha, I did that when I was in sec 2. And then I lost interest in competitive running soon after that.
Now am an uncle who can barely maintain 5min 30 secs per km pace for 5 km for exercise :s13:

I can still put up some fight, or at least I try to 🤣. Just realised while eating dinner, I did a search on last year cross country/wings results. The girl that I paced with during my 5km time trial last week in the running club I go, was a cross country runner last year. Ran the 3.8km in 15.40. Recently ran the 1.5km in 5.23 before the 5k club time trial.

Then face off against me in the club. I overtook her mid run but turned late since I overestimated the distance without my GPS watch, saw her turning before me. Tried to catch up to her and outkick her in the end but let her win since she paced me throughout the final stretch.

Quite a fast runner though, was able to secure 6th in cross country for her year.
Came across this.

ae4Dm9j.jpg

Last year (2023), to get to top 20, have to be 8.40+ 2.4km runner.

The national cross country race was faster, need to be at least 17.45 to make top 20, which translates to 8.30+ 2.4km pace.

Just sharing this info here. The recently released budget Garmin Forerunner 165 is already officially available locally. Non music version official rrp $379 but i seen lower from some carousell sellers. The 165, apart from certain functions, seems very similar to the 265 but at much lower price point.
